NewJeans Accused of Plagiarism For ‘How Sweet’ — K-Netz Defend Girl Group

Despite the recent release of “How Sweet”by NewJeans, the group was quickly met with allegations of plagiarism. Nevertheless, Korean netizens swiftly came to their defense.

NewJeans recently released the music video for their latest single, “How Sweet,”on May 24. This lively hip-hop song draws inspiration from Miami Bass, adding to the girl group’s distinct and hip style.

Despite the excitement among Bunnies for the release, there were also concerns raised about NewJeans due to the ongoing conflict between ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin and HYBE. Shortly after the release of the video, YouTuber Tiona (literal translation) uploaded a video comparing “How Sweet”to two other songs.

The YouTuber noted that “How Sweet”shares similarities with Midnight Fusic’s “Summer Love”and Karencitta’s “F.U.I.L.Y.”These similarities can be heard in the song’s tempo and rhythm, as well as in the way NewJeans sings it, which is reminiscent of the performances of the two other artists.

Despite the initial backlash, many netizens quickly came to NewJean’s defense. They noted that the melody has been frequently used in songs, particularly in the Miami Bass and House Drum genres. As a result, this alone is insufficient evidence to accuse NewJeans of plagiarism.

Some individuals brought up the plagiarism allegations against LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT, noting that there is a significant basis for accusing these two girl groups of imitating other artists. However, the same cannot be said for NewJeans’s situation.

At first, it was speculated by netizens that the video was created by either a HYBE part-timer or a devoted HYBE fan, considering its release coincided with the launch of NewJeans’s new song. However, it was later revealed that the video was produced by an anonymous individual from the online forum DC Inside.

A user claimed credit for the post, stating that it took them two hours to create and questioning whether they would actually share it. They proceeded to ridicule Min Hee Jin for crying during her press conference for two hours and her argument that K-pop should not be similar, which they cited as the primary motivation for posting the video.

While many have speculated that the video was created by someone from DC Inside, it was noted that this would align with the community’s reputation for harboring “incels”and “trolls”who hold toxic masculinity and pro-misogyny beliefs. Despite the widespread support for Min Hee Jin, DC Inside is known for being a breeding ground for such individuals.

The majority of the DC Inside community has shown strong support for HYBE due to their disdain for Min Hee Jin, a highly regarded and innovative female figure in the K-pop industry.

Upon learning that the creator of the video was affiliated with DC Inside, Korean netizens swiftly criticized the individual. They expressed their disdain for the platform, with some playfully teasing that its members have an unpleasant aura. Others sympathized with LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT, as DC Inside has been a strong supporter of the two groups.
