NewJeans Accused of Plagiarizing Two Songs For Latest Release ‘Bubble Gum’

NewJeans is facing accusations of copying not only one, but two songs for their newest single, “Bubble Gum.”

NewJeans debuted the music video for their pre-release single, “Bubble Gum,”on April 26.

The music video has generated excitement among fans with its fresh vibe, as it showcases a vibrant school setting and a mellow sound that is reminiscent of past hits by NewJeans.

Despite being only days away from their anticipated comeback with the release of their single “How Sweet,”NewJeans faced accusations of plagiarism. It was widely speculated that their song “Bubble Gum”bore a striking resemblance to “Easier Said Than Done”by the British jazz-funk band SHAKATAK.

SHAKATAK publicly recognized these similarities on their social media and revealed intentions to conduct a more thorough investigation.

As a response, a YouTuber uploaded a video examining both songs and highlighting notable discrepancies in their chord progressions. As a result, it was determined that there was no plagiarism in “Bubble Gum”from “Easier Said Than Done.”The YouTuber proposed that the dispute may have originated from a deceptive combination of the two songs.

There were speculations that “Bubble Gum”contained a sample from “Easier Said Than Done,”although there was no official documentation of this sample on copyright platforms or in the song’s credits. However, this is merely a personal interpretation and not a definitive declaration that the group did not plagiarize. As a result, numerous individuals are eagerly anticipating a statement from ADOR regarding this issue.

SHAKATAK’s hit song “Easier Said Than Done”has remained popular since its release in 1981. Despite numerous lineup changes, the group has continued to stay active.

Moreover, fans of Vietnamese music had previously pointed out the similarities between the spoken portions of “Bubble Gum”and Bich Phuong’s 2021 song “Do You Guess.”However, Bunnies (the fandom of NewJeans) defended that this particular vocal style was already prevalent in multiple songs before the release of both “Do You Guess”and “Bubble Gum.”

The allegations of plagiarism against NewJeans have provoked a range of responses on the internet. While some do not hold NewJeans directly responsible, they argue that the song did bear a resemblance. Others are advocating for the producer to issue a statement to clarify the situation.

Several comments were seen saying,

  • “Yesterday, I saw a comment comparing ‘Bubble Gum’ with ‘Easier Said Than Done.’ They’re quite different; ‘Bubble Gum’ builds up steadily, whereas ‘Easier Said Than Done’ unfolds slowly without a climax. The melody, rhythm, and overall production are totally different.”
  • “It’s weird that the song’s owner acknowledged the similarities but the YouTuber didn’t. It’s best for the public to give their opinions and let the professionals handle it.”
  • “The YouTuber said there was no plagiarism. It’s like having a professional musician or a music review board make that conclusion.”
  • “Has the producer who created ‘Easier Said Than Done’ made any statements? Only the creator would truly know if it was sampled or copied.”
  • “We should ask the producer directly instead of targeting NewJeans!”
