Following the choreographer of NewJeans’s accusation that ILLIT copied the group’s dance, netizens are now asserting that it was actually them who first copied BLACKPINK’s Lisa.
On May 13, 2024, the K-pop industry was rocked by controversy when choreographers Kim Eunju and Black Q accused ILLIT of plagiarism. This accusation came amid tensions between HYBE Labels and Min Hee Jin, as the former sought to remove her from her role as CEO of ADOR.
The crux of the matter lies in HYBE’s introduction of their latest girl group, ILLIT. Min Hee Jin has accused HYBE Labels and BELIFT Lab of copying NewJeans’s formula in order to guarantee ILLIT’s triumphant debut. As a consequence, ILLIT has been met with considerable criticism on the internet, with people branding them as an “imitation group.”Observers have pointed out numerous resemblances in terms of concept, costumes, and choreography between ILLIT and NewJeans, leading to doubts about their creativity.
The accusations of plagiarism gained more attention when Kim Eunju posted on Instagram, claiming that ILLIT had copied NewJeans. In her post, she stated, “Is this true? Did they really copy the choreography from the commercial? I’ve been quiet for a while, but to claim it’s just a coincidence is unacceptable. While there may be similarities, it’s common practice to make some changes when referencing something; this is simply plagiarism.”
Black Q shared his frustrations, exclaiming, “I can’t believe it! I’ve been holding back these thoughts, but it seems even CF choreography is not immune. It is not an easy task to bring someone’s creative work into the public eye.”
Both ILLIT’s “Lucky Girl Syndrome”choreography and NewJeans’ dance for their previous McDonald’s commercial were mentioned in their remarks due to their apparent similarities.
A video comparing ILLIT and NewJeans’s choreography quickly circulated on social media, with numerous individuals supporting the choreographers’ assertions that ILLIT’s dance was noticeably similar to NewJeans’s.
Who tf do they think we are? Do they seriously think we will see this as just another ‘coincidence’ after the many otherspic.twitter.com/8KdHIq9hoP https://t.co/o8rCcKBT6O

Despite these assertions, it was noted by some that NewJeans’s dance was also influenced by others, including the choreography performed by BLACKPINK member Lisa for “MONEY.”
The conversation also brought attention to the incorporation of commonly used dance moves in the entertainment industry. Fans came to the defense of their favorite idols, arguing that the moves were not particularly distinctive. Supporters of ILLIT maintained that any accusations of plagiarism or artistic decisions should be directed towards the company, rather than the individual artists. They believe that the agency should be held accountable for any criticism, not ILLIT themselves.
Furthermore, supporters of NewJeans disputed claims that the band imitated Lisa, arguing that certain actions, such as the hand-spreading gesture, are commonly employed and should not be deemed as plagiarism.
