NewJeans Rebrands as NJZ: Insights from Their Exclusive Interview

On February 8, the Japanese news outlet TV Asahi unveiled a video interview with the popular K-Pop group NewJeans, who have recently rebranded themselves as NJZ. This announcement was made the previous day, marking a significant moment for the group and their fans.

Meaning Behind NJZ

During the interview, member Haerin shared the significance of their new name: “NJZ stands for the essence of each of us—Minji, Hanni, Hyein, Danielle, and myself. It represents our commitment to exploration and innovation.” The group aims to embody the essence of their individual identities while embracing a fresh path forward.

Joyful Connection with Fans

Hanni chimed in on the naming choice, stating, “We wanted to keep spreading joy under the name ‘NJZ.’ Additionally, we added a special meaning tied to our fandom, the Bunnies, that they would uniquely understand. Choosing February 7 for this announcement echoes our debut date of July 22, creating a fun, reflective connection.”

Fandom Identity Endures

When inquired about their fandom name, the members confirmed, “Absolutely! Some clever fans have started calling themselves ‘BNZ, ’ and we love that as well.” This lighthearted response underscores the group’s harmonious relationship with their supporters.

In a heartfelt message, Minji addressed the limited media presence in South Korea, stating in Japanese, “Currently, few media outlets in Korea amplify our voices. Nevertheless, we remain undeterred, spreading joy as we pursue our goals with relentless enthusiasm.”

Reflecting on her aspirations, Hyein excitedly commented, “I am looking forward to creating many joyful memories with our Bunnies.” This sentiment highlights the group’s commitment to their fans as they chart a new course in their careers.

Future Aspirations

Minji concluded with optimism, stating, “Performing at the Tokyo Dome still feels surreal. We have myriad dreams to achieve, and we are dedicated to making them a reality. Please continue your support.”

The Road Ahead for NJZ

In November, amidst a whirlwind of changes, NewJeans declared their contract termination with ADOR during an emergency press conference. Since then, the group has been working independently, showcasing their resilience and determination to reshape their identity.

The recent announcement of their new name, NJZ, signifies their return to the music scene. They are set to perform at “ComplexCon Hong Kong” in March, an exciting step towards reestablishing their presence in the industry.

Legal Developments

Despite their hopeful outlook, NewJeans is currently embroiled in legal disputes with their former agency, ADOR. The Seoul Central District Court has scheduled an injunction hearing for March 7, concerning ADOR’s bid to maintain its agency status and limit new advertising contracts with NJZ. Furthermore, the first trial to determine the validity of their contract is poised for April 3.

As the situation unfolds, industry watchers are keenly focused on NJZ as they navigate these challenges and continue to pursue their artistic vision independently.
