NewJeans’ most recent university music festival performance has sparked mixed reactions due to accusations of lip-syncing.
On May 24, amidst the ongoing disputes between the CEO of HYBE, Min Hee Jin, and their label, NewJeans officially made their comeback with the double single “How Sweet.”
Currently, the group is promoting with four members as their youngest member Hyein is on a temporary hiatus due to health reasons.
The girl group is participating in a variety of university music festivals as part of their promotional activities.
Despite initial expectations, the girls’ recent performance at Korea University was met with criticism as they were found to be lip-syncing for the majority of their set.

NewJeans delivered lively renditions of well-known favorites such as “Super Shy”and “ETA,”in addition to debuting their latest tracks “How Sweet”and “Bubble Gum.”The energetic performances from NewJeans got the audience pumped up and excited.
Nevertheless, their performance was strongly criticized for its extremely loud backing tracks, which overpowered their live singing and resulted in allegations of lip-syncing.
Despite previous accusations, NewJeans is facing increased scrutiny in light of the ongoing legal dispute between ADOR and HYBE. This dispute has also involved various girl groups under the HYBE umbrella, including LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT.
Despite the lack of talent among netizens from all three girl groups, the public’s forgiveness towards the group remains minimal.
The audience was disappointed by NewJeans’ lip-syncing during their university performance, especially since LE SSERAFIM and ILLIT were also criticized for the same issue.
This backlash has occurred during a difficult period for NewJeans, as they are also dealing with accusations of copying parts of other songs for their “How Sweet”comeback, which has further damaged their reputation.
A few of the comments said:
- “Using a handheld mic while lip-syncing looks so ridiculous.”
- “If you’re not going to sing live, don’t bother pretending to hold the mic.”
- “Without the loud backtrack, NewJeans’ performance would be just like LE SSERAFIM’s at Coachella. Can’t really sing but adds a few hype words here and there. The inconsistency with backtracks between performances doesn’t help either.”
- “Despite being called the ‘number 1 girl group of the fourth generation,’ they’ve been getting a pass without much criticism.”
- “Wasn’t it obvious that this group always used loud backtracks?”
- “The lip-syncing is so obvious, it’s frustrating.”
- “They’re all from the same HYBE mold, and their talent doesn’t seem any better.”
