NewJeans Features on Pitchfork’s Top 100 Songs of the 2020s: Celebrating ‘Their Most Effortless Masterstroke’

Although NewJeans is a relatively new K-pop group, having debuted just two years ago in 2022, they have swiftly gained substantial recognition. They have amassed numerous awards and shattered multiple records with chart-topping tracks, the latest being the fan-favorite “Super Shy,”which recently secured a spot on Pitchfork’s 100 Best Songs of the 2020s So Far.

This five-member group’s catchy track claimed the 13th position on Pitchfork’s prestigious list, published on October 1.

NewJeans stands out as the only K-pop group to make this esteemed roster, even surpassing global superstars such as Cardi B’s “WAP,”Beyoncé’s “ALIEN SUPERSTAR,”Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 u,”and Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,”among others!

As noted by Pitchfork, “Super Shy”showcases NewJeans’ “most effortless masterstroke,”highlighting its ability to “capture the giddiness of possibility.”The publication, recognized for its detailed and rigorous critiques, commended the track’s light drum and bass rhythm, which contributes to its overall airy vibe.

Culture journalist Joshua Minsoo Kim remarked, “NewJeans invite you to relish the fantasy, all the members singing as if letting out a daydreamer’s sigh.”

Featured on their extended play titled “Get Up,”NewJeans’ “Super Shy”was launched in July 2023 in partnership with The Powerpuff Girls to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

The music video showcases the members discussing superpowers, with a “pixelated”animation style that pays homage to the iconic series. Additionally, the five girls even transform into their own version of the Powerpuff Girls at one point.
