On March 26, the BBC published a revealing interview with the members of NewJeans (NJZ). During this candid discussion, the group reflected on a challenging year and how those experiences are influencing their ongoing journey in the music industry.Hanni particularly stood out for her insightful comments concerning the wider implications of their current situation.

While looking back at the past year’s events, Hanni stressed that their actions were not made hastily but were the result of thorough discussions among the group. She highlighted the complexities they face, noting how their predicament has also involved “another team.”
Although Hanni refrained from naming the group directly, her statements seemed to reference previous allegations of concept plagiarism directed at ILLIT, a rookie girl group under HYBE. These allegations, which arose amidst public disputes between ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin and HYBE, ignited online discussions due to perceived similarities in the aesthetics of ILLIT’s debut compared to those of NewJeans.

In the interview, Hanni expressed her anxiety about repeatedly having to speak on this contentious issue, particularly due to its potential repercussions for other artists. She articulated a heartfelt desire to protect those who might be inadvertently caught in the fallout.
“We feel uncomfortable constantly discussing this, especially knowing how it could impact another team. It’s unnecessary for them and not something we want, ” Hanni articulated with empathy.

Despite her qualms, Hanni also highlighted that silence isn’t a viable option. She underlined the necessity of clarifying their stance, especially against the backdrop of skewed media portrayals.“We felt compelled to speak out. If we hadn’t, people would just accept everything they heard elsewhere as truth, ” she added.
Furthermore, the members of NewJeans shared their frustrations regarding their evolving circumstances and their commitment to making collective decisions. Following a recent court ruling in favor of ADOR concerning their injunction case, the girl group has filed an objection and announced a temporary suspension of their activities.
