Lee Ji-hoon Discusses Legal Implications for NewJeans
In a recent video posted on the YouTube channel “Korea Lawyer,”legal expert Lee Ji-hoon addressed the ongoing legal challenges faced by the K-pop group NewJeans. He asserted that the group cannot utilize their name or previously released songs due to the intricacies of their contractual obligations.
Contractual Boundaries and Future Steps
Lee emphasized the importance of consistency in claims, stating, “You can’t keep changing your claims. Since NewJeans are asserting their contract termination with ADOR, it’s natural they cannot use the name or existing songs.” He further suggested that if they wish to retain the name “NewJeans,”pursuing legal action would be their only option.
The attorney pointed out that while the group is currently fulfilling their existing commitments, the core of the dispute may only become apparent once these obligations are completed. He warned that the situation could escalate significantly if they fail to adhere to the plans set by ADOR. Former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin allegedly anticipated possible penalties for the group amounting to a staggering 620 billion KRW.
Financial Considerations and Legal Encumbrances
Addressing the financial ramifications, Lee stated, “This is not a criminal issue but a civil matter, focusing on monetary compensation. The simplest cases to resolve typically involve financial settlements. Although paying may be unpleasant, it is essential.” He noted that while NewJeans’ assertion of contract termination is valid, financial commitments must still be honored.
NewJeans’ Recent Performances and Collaborations
The five members of NewJeans—Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein—who recently notified ADOR of their contract termination, performed during YOASOBI’s second concert in Korea at Incheon Inspire Arena on December 7th. They entertained the audience with songs including “How Sweet,””Right Now,”and YOASOBI’s popular track “Biri-Biri.”
During their performance, the members expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with YOASOBI again, following their previous engagement at the Tokyo Dome fan meeting. Hyein remarked, “It’s an honor to be a guest at YOASOBI’s concert.” In response, YOASOBI’s Ikura commented on the delightful continuity of their relationship, saying, “It’s wonderful that our connection from the Tokyo Dome event has led to this concert.”
Previously, YOASOBI had shared a teaser of NewJeans’ song “Ditto.” Minji expressed her admiration for YOASOBI’s music, listing her favorites such as “Yuusha,” “Into the Night,” “Monster,” and “Tracing A Dream.” She also took the opportunity to recommend popular Korean dishes, including Sundae and Rice Soup, along with kimchi stew.
In an enthusiastic message via social media, YOASOBI shared moments with NewJeans, stating, “YOASOBI Asia Tour Korea Concert DAY1, thank you! The best start! Special thanks to NewJeans for joining us as guests. We had an amazing time!”
