In the latest episode of SBS’s “Dilemma Game 2,” which aired on September 19th, director Shin Woo-seok was a featured guest and shared insights about the renowned Hong Kong actor Tony Leung.
Shin Woo-seok previously cast Tony Leung in the music video for NewJeans’ popular track “Cool With You.”
During the episode, Shin Woo-seok revealed intriguing behind-the-scenes details, stating, “I wrote a letter to extend the offer. CEO Min Hee-jin handed it to Tony Leung, and we received a call expressing his interest in the role.”
Host Hong Jin-kyung inquired, “What is he like in person? Is he taciturn?” To which, Shin Woo-seok responded, “He is more shy than I anticipated.” Hong Jin-kyung expressed surprise, asking, “How could such a shy person perform in ‘Lust, Caution’?”
Shin Woo-seok mentioned, “Tony Leung expressed that he appreciated the project and was eager to participate without any guarantee,” prompting Lee Yong-jin to remark, “Truly a remarkable actor with a unique spirit.”
Shin Woo-seok began narrating the life story of Leung, noting, “Tony Leung’s experiences closely reflect the narrative arcs of Hong Kong cinema.”
In a past incident while filming, Tony Leung received devastating news that his girlfriend Carina Lau had gone missing after being kidnapped by armed men, although she later returned home unharmed.
Years later, a magazine leaked sensitive photographs of Carina Lau taken by her kidnappers at that time, leading many to speculate that Leung might part ways with her due to the fallout.
In a bold statement, he affirmed, “Regardless of the circumstances, my love for Carina Lau remains unchanged.” At that period, Tony Leung had just won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000, marking the pinnacle of his acting career. Inspired by Tony Leung’s steadfastness, Carina Lau led a protest that created significant media attention.
Reacting to this narrative, NMIXX’s Haewon remarked, “It must have been incredibly challenging to support her through that. I’m glad Tony Leung was by her side.”
Ultimately, after 19 years of dating, Tony Leung and Carina Lau tied the knot.
