Teens are engaging in stealing sprees to collect the zippers from Nike Elite backpacks, amassing dozens of them and reselling these sought-after items for a significant profit to victims of the latest online trend.
A trend gaining traction on social media has seen thieves removing the zippers from Nike Elite backpacks. TikTok users are even sharing videos showcasing the zippers they have swiped from others’ bags.
One New York City teen boasted about his expanding collection, which has already reached over a dozen zipper ties, unique to the Nike Elite backpack model, cautioning others not to leave their bags unguarded around him.
Other TikTok videos feature the mischievous teens bragging about how many zippers they can collect in a single day at school, including their resale value on the market.

Some thieves are endorsing the trend, claiming it could help them “pay my bills” by charging several dollars for a zipper to those victimized by the activity. Yet, others are jacking up prices to a staggering $40, as per comments on TikTok.
Public Outrage as Schools Issue Warnings About Zipper Thieves
One creator expressed that others have “taken [it] way too far” in a TikTok post featuring footage of store shelves stocked with Nike Elite backpacks, all devoid of their fabric zipper ties.
A Reddit user, claiming to be a victim of this trend, lamented: “What the hell is with this trend of people taking the zippers off Nike Elite backpacks?”

“In the past week, I, along with many others, have had almost all of our zippers taken from our backpacks while we are out walking.”
Other commenters shared similar experiences, with one noting: “My son’s zippers were stolen yesterday. I am so frustrated. Buy your own stuff, losers.”
Another added: “This is one of the lamest trends I’ve seen. Stealing from others isn’t cool. Plus, the entire concept looks trash, and they’re merely standard zip pulls with a plastic covering.”

Certain schools have been compelled to send out email warnings regarding this trend, as reported by TikTok users, while Nike Elite backpack owners who are “angered by this trend” have begun carrying their backpacks in front of them instead of on their backs, double-knotting the ties to make them tougher to steal or removing them altogether.
The origin of this trend remains uncertain; however, a Reddit user mentioned that their father was also a victim of a similar incident 30 years ago.
They wrote: “This isn’t a new trend at all. When I told my dad about it, he mentioned they’ve been doing this ever since he was in high school over 30 years ago. Some stores even began selling the zippers individually.”
This is not the only recent outrage among TikTok users, as one individual stirred up controversy after confronting a woman who took their phone charger on an airplane.
