Nine Sols Boss Guide: How to Beat General Yingzhao

General Yingzhao is the initial major boss encountered in Nine Sols, serving as a test of one’s proficiency in basic combat and movement techniques. This formidable cybernetic centaur can present a significant challenge for inexperienced players, particularly those who have not yet mastered the parry and talisman mechanics. This guide will provide the most effective strategy for defeating General Yingzhao.

General Yingzhao Phase One

During his initial phase, General Yingzhao will traverse the map at a high speed and execute three distinct types of potential attacks.

The initial move involves a gradual downward strike followed by an upward cut. The most effective strategy is to block both attacks consecutively and use the talisman for increased impact. This move has a relatively lengthy preparation sequence, making it simpler to parry compared to other moves.

It can be challenging to perfectly parry Yingzhao’s running sweep. To successfully block it, we suggest parrying as soon as the spear starts its upward arc. He typically performs this move twice in a row from different sides of the screen, allowing you to strike back while he repositions himself.

In addition, Yingzhao is capable of performing a thrusting attack that may seem to be accompanied by a red aura. However, this attack is not truly a crimson attack and can still be countered with a successful parry.

To ensure maximum damage, it is important to follow up with a talisman attack after parrying all three of Yingzhao’s attacks. Even if you manage to dodge a few of his attacks, you can still strike him with your regular attack, whether on the ground or in the air. It is most effective to attack him from behind.

Remember, there is no requirement for you to be on the ground in order to parry or use the talisman. In many situations, you will be jumping and performing the same actions, which we also suggest.

General Yingzhao Phase Two

Once General Yingzhao’s health is depleted in Phase One, he will return to his platform and fully regenerate his health for Phase Two. During this phase, General Yingzhao will continue to use all the attacks from Phase One, as well as two new crimson attacks that cannot be parried.

The initial crimson attack involves a downward thrust that must be evaded. It is not possible to parry or use the Tai-Chi kick, so avoid attempting to do so. Instead, quickly dodge as soon as the attacker throws the spear upwards and jumps into the air. Failure to do so will result in taking damage.

At the start of the second crimson attack, a charge up animation signals that it is time to prepare. Once you spot the green highlight surrounding his body, leap towards him and execute a Tai-Chi kick. This will temporarily immobilize him, giving you the opportunity to use the talisman or begin attacking him.

In case you struggle with the timing of the crimson attack, dodging is a viable alternative. You can also execute the Tai-Chi kick while dodging. Yingzhao will utilize attacks from both phases, thus mastering the art of parrying remains crucial. Merely relying on regular attacks will prolong the battle and not effectively deplete his health.

Defeating General Yingzhao will grant you the Herb Catalyst, which can enhance the effectiveness of your Pipe.
