Nintendo has officially addressed the recent mockup of the Switch 2 consoles and Joy-Cons displayed at a trade show, clarifying that these designs are not affiliated with the company or based on any official prototypes.
Currently, Nintendo is not in a hurry to unveil the next iteration of the Switch, but a multitude of leaks have surfaced online, including images showing the development of the hardware. This speculation was further heightened at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where accessory manufacturer Genki showcased what they claimed to be a Switch 2 unit.
Nintendo Disavows Switch 2 Mockup Claims
According to CNET Japan, the company reached out to Nintendo for clarification regarding the CES unit. Nintendo’s reply confirmed doubts about the authenticity of the hardware displayed by Genki, stating: “The gaming hardware that Genki is claiming to be Nintendo hardware at CES is unofficial and was not provided to the company by Nintendo.”
This response suggests that Nintendo may be exercising caution, ensuring that it does not validate any premature claims ahead of an official announcement for the upcoming console. The Genki unit indeed resembles previously leaked designs; however, no industry insiders have refuted these mockups thus far.
Nonetheless, it’s also plausible that the CES mockup was entirely speculative, constructed from unreliable leak information. Such a scenario would require the redesign of all associated accessories if the actual console deviates from the mockup.
Nintendo’s carefully chosen language in its statement hints at a strategic reservation, providing a potential exit if the mockup turns out to be accurate. Notably, Genki has consistently maintained that their showcased products are not authentic hardware but mere replicas intended for presentation.
This differs from standard practice in the industry, leading to calls for Nintendo to expedite the unveiling of the Switch 2, thereby quelling ongoing speculation. Previously, the company indicated that the new system would be revealed by the end of the current financial quarter, which concludes in March. However, given the continuous stream of leaks, Nintendo may want to hasten this timeline to preserve the integrity of its forthcoming announcement.
