Despite being under the label of JYP Entertainment, known for producing successful girl groups such as Wonder Girls, Miss A, TWICE, and ITZY, NMIXX, consisting of members Haewon, Bae, Jiwoo, Kyujin, Lily, and Sullyoon, faced initial struggles in gaining significant attention upon their debut in 2022 with their single “AD MARE”.
Despite debuting during the Beijing Olympics, when other rookie girl groups such as IVE, LE SSERAFIM, and NewJeans were gaining popularity, NMIXX’s timing was not ideal. However, their lack of mainstream appeal was the main obstacle in their early success. The group’s mix-pop style and fashion choices did not resonate with the general public, preventing them from capitalizing on the usual excitement surrounding a JYP girl group debut.
Despite the obstacles they faced, NMIXX was able to maintain a considerable level of recognition thanks to Sullyoon’s striking looks and Haewon’s charming personality. Their reputation as a group with exceptional live performance capabilities gained them increasing attention earlier this year, and their recent performances at university festivals have only enhanced their popularity. They have received acclaim for both their skills and appearance.
Despite already showcasing their talent and charm, NMIXX’s upcoming comeback holds great importance. As with other successful girl groups from the JYP label such as Wonder Girls, Miss A, TWICE, and ITZY during their early days, gaining widespread popularity among the general public is crucial for NMIXX’s success. While their unique mix-pop sound sets them apart, without any mainstream appeal, their potential for success may be hindered. Thankfully, their most recent release “DASH”has managed to generate some public interest.
Despite gaining more mainstream recognition through their promotions with “DASH” , NMIXX has yet to find a song with wide appeal. However, with their strong vocals, impressive dance skills, consistent styling, and striking visuals, they have all the necessary ingredients for success. It is now up to JYP to strategically incorporate some mainstream elements into their mix-pop style in order to further enhance NMIXX’s popularity.
