Upon reaching the World Tree, known as the largest tree in Zauberberg, Sensei and his party are greeted with the belief that the tree bestows blessings upon travelers who visit. Annette suggests that they spend a few days in the nearby Toneriko village, located at the base of the tree, and everyone readily agrees.
Nevertheless, upon reaching their destination, they discover that the place has become a hub of wickedness, as the inhabitants from the Otherworld have started to infiltrate the peaceful village. The village’s leader urges Dazai and his companions to drive out the intruders and rescue their community. He also brings up the dire condition of the World Tree, which has suffered due to the settlers’ presence.
Yamada, an Otherworlder, promises the elder that he will help with the world tree crisis. He distinguishes himself from other Otherworlders who only revel in corruption. Meanwhile, Dazai realizes that he has depleted his supply of sleeping pills.
Despite being unable to die, he seeks refuge in a cave where he encounters a beautiful woman named Esche. She invites Osamu Dazai to a nearby establishment, where she offers him a drink and lends a sympathetic ear to his troubled past. With a graceful dance, Esche manages to uplift Dazai’s spirits. It is later revealed that she is infamous as the Witch of Toneriko, known for her alliance with the Otherworlders.
The following day, Dazai once again runs into Esche and stands firm in his decision not to participate in the battle against the Otherworlders. However, the situation takes a turn for the worse when a group of Otherworlders attempt to involve innocent villagers in their affairs. Esche, who speaks out against their actions, ends up getting injured by one of the Otherworlders.
At that exact moment, Yamada appears and confronts the wicked settlers, using his powers of righteousness to drive them away. Despite this, he still holds a grudge towards Esche and intends to hold her accountable for her actions.
Surprisingly, Sensei assists the woman and expresses to Yamada his dislike for those who try to impose their own beliefs on others. Despite this, the rest of the villagers still turn against Esche, even though they are aware that she kept the Otherworlders occupied to protect them from getting involved in their affairs.
Despite being rejected by the villagers, Esche departs from the village. Sensei laments the loss of the village’s sole guardian deity. As Dazai and his companions depart, they observe the World Tree’s gradual decay. A seraphic being then appears before Dazai, imparting a blessing for their journey ahead. The episode concludes with Dazai coming to the realization that Esche was, in fact, the embodiment of the World Tree’s spirit.
