Nobara’s Return: The Need for Justification in Jujutsu Kaisen

Nobara’s reappearance in Jujutsu Kaisen was met with much excitement. After approximately 140 chapters, followers were kept in suspense about her well-being. She was last witnessed during the Shibuya Incident, engaged in a battle against the notorious Mahito. Despite her valiant efforts, the Curse was able to deliver a deadly strike. As a result, Nobara Kugisaki became a metaphorical Schrodinger’s cat, meaning her fate was uncertain and she could potentially be both alive and dead.

Despite teasing the fandom for a while, creator Gege Akutami finally brings her back in the latest chapter with a bang. As Yuji Itadori’s abilities continue to grow exponentially and Megumi Fushiguro fights against Ryomen Sukuna, it was only fitting for the sorcerer trio to reunite once again.

Despite appearing to have little justification for her return, Jujutsu Kaisen brought Nobara back. However, with only five chapters left in the series, there is limited time for Akutami to adequately justify her return.

As previously stated, the last known sighting of Nobara Kugisaki was during the Shibuya Incident. While facing a Mahito clone, her Straw Doll Technique and Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration led to a confrontation where she managed to corner the clone. In a desperate attempt to escape, the clone fled back to its original body. Unfortunately, the real Mahito was able to make contact with Nobara’s face, resulting in severe damage to the left side.

Yuji was devastated after witnessing Kento Nanami’s death, which left him without the will to fight. However, Todo Aoi and Arata Nitta’s timely intervention turned the situation around. Arata then comforted Yuji, assuring him that he had used his Cursed Technique (CT) Painkiller to the best of his ability in an attempt to save Nobara. However, he neither confirmed nor denied her death, leaving the possibility of both outcomes open.

However, Nobara’s reappearance in chapter 267 brings about some changes. While it is certainly thrilling to witness Nobara’s return and the reunion of the trio, it also raises a few questions: How did she manage to survive? Where has she been for the past 140 chapters? What has she been occupied with during this time? And who was aware of her survival but kept it a secret?

Despite various explanations being offered, there are many concerns surrounding Nobara’s return. One theory suggests that she survived because Mahito only touched her face briefly, which may not have given him enough time to fully use his Idle Transfiguration ability. As a result, he may have only been able to cause damage to her eye rather than completely transform her.

Additionally, Painkiller prevents existing injuries from getting worse. Therefore, if Arata had not arrived in time, the wound could have been fatal. It is likely that Shoko Ieiri secretly nursed Nobara back to health after she was taken there. This is likely because Yuji’s growth and development into what he becomes would not have been possible without Nobara’s supposed death.

Also, to prevent their advantage from being lost, only a few individuals, such as Utahime Iori and Yoshinobu Gakuganji, were aware of her existence.

Despite the fact that the Straw Doll Technique is the most dangerous for Sukuna due to its ability to attack the soul, there is still uncertainty surrounding other aspects. Although some questions have been resolved, there are lingering mysteries and with only five chapters remaining, Jujutsu Kaisen must quickly explain Nobara’s resurrection.
