North Korean Defector Shares Touching Journey on K-Pop Survival Show

On May 15, the first episode of KBS’s latest K-pop survival show, “Make Mate 1,”was aired. One contestant on the show has already gained attention for his unique background as a defector from North Korea.

Specifically, the individual being referred to is Kim Hakseong, who was born in 2004. His introduction, which included the phrase “escaped from the North,”left his fellow trainees surprised.

Kim Hakseong claims to have fled North Korea and arrived in South Korea in 2017, at the age of approximately 13.

The trainee proceeded to explain his motivation for pursuing a career as an idol. He shared, “Upon arriving in South Korea, I struggled to adapt to the culture. However, while living in my new home, I frequently watched TV and became captivated by K-pop idols. This sparked a dream within me to become one myself.”

Kim Hakseong shared that recounting his harrowing escape was a source of stress for him, and he became increasingly emotional as he shared his story.

As Kim Hakseong spoke, tears welled up in the eyes of numerous trainees and judges. This was especially true when the North Korean trainee expressed his desire to bring hope to those facing difficult circumstances and unable to chase their aspirations.
