Fans are still raving about Robert Eggers’ latest horror film, Nosferatu, but new rumors suggest that he may not be done with classic remakes just yet. Following the film’s critical acclaim and strong box office performance, Eggers appears to have a wealth of potential projects on his hands.
In a recent interview, Eggers mentioned various projects in development, including a medieval epic titled The Knight and a miniseries centered around Rasputin. With this many prospects, it seems he may soon need to clear more space for an exciting new venture.
Possible Remake of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth
According to a report from Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, Eggers might be taking on a remake of the beloved 1986 film, Labyrinth, originally created by Jim Henson.
This new iteration would mark Eggers’ first project aimed at a broader audience, moving away from the R-rating seen in his previous films. Furthermore, he is expected to collaborate once again with Sjón, his co-writer from The Northman, to craft the screenplay. Reports suggest that Alexander Skarsgård, who starred in The Northman, may be in talks to step into the shoes of Jareth the Goblin King—a role immortalized by David Bowie in the original.
The remake would be produced by both Sony and the Jim Henson Company, although it remains uncertain how closely it will follow the aesthetic and thematic elements of the original film. Despite its likely departure from an R-rating, it is anticipated that Eggers will infuse the story with his signature rich world-building and a darker tone, consistent with his unique storytelling style.
While there is a possibility that this project might not materialize given the history of stalled sequels and remakes for Labyrinth, Eggers’ success with Nosferatu demonstrates his ability to breathe new life into long-held ideas. Interestingly, audiences can expect more from Nosferatu soon, as a 3-hour extended edition is on the way. If this remake of Labyrinth does come to fruition, fans could be in for a treat.
