Britpop icons Oasis briefly delved into the world of anime, lending their talents to create the opening song for a single episode of a 2009 series.
In 2009, Eden of the East was released to much excitement, as it was a unique creation from director Kenji Kamiyama and Production IG, known for their work on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
Eden of the East is a down-to-earth TV series that centers around a high school student who develops a friendship with a man suffering from amnesia after a terrorist attack occurs in Japan.
The series is known for one specific decision that catches the attention of first-time viewers: the use of ‘Falling Down’ by Oasis as the opening theme. However, it is important to mention that it is only used in the initial episode.
The song, featured on the group’s 2008 album Dig Out Your Soul, perfectly establishes the mood. The abundant use of percussion adds just the right level of energy, while the multiple layers of sound enhance the atmosphere and complement the visuals in the background.
The lyrics also hold significance as Noel Gallagher, in one of his few instances as the lead vocalist for Oasis, sings, “Here am I, lost and found, calling out to all.”While it may not exude the same confidence as ‘Champagne Supernova’ or have the same intensity as ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’, this marked a new era in the band’s trajectory.
Unfortunately, due to licensing complications, the song was only permitted for use once. Funimation, now a subsidiary of Crunchyroll, was able to secure the rights for using the song in Eden of the East outside of Japan, but only for one episode.
To ensure uninterrupted playback for all three seasons, it is necessary to have the song ready on a different platform. Currently, Eden of the East holds a high rating of 4.6 on Crunchyroll, making it highly recommended to watch the entire series.
In addition to the opening theme, ‘Michael ka Belial’ by Saori Hayami offers a unique experience for all attendees. This will be the perfect accompaniment for Oasis’ highly anticipated return to the live stage, and also serves as a distraction from any difficulties encountered while trying to secure tickets.
