Oculus VR founder reveals ModRetro Chromatic Game Boy tribute device

Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey has recently unveiled the ModRetro Chromatic handheld, which resembles a Game Boy and is compatible with both original and Color titles.

Over the past few years, there has been a significant increase in the popularity of retro gaming consoles, and the Analogue Pocket and Miyoo Mini+ are currently among the most widely used devices.

Palmer Luckey, the original creator of Oculus VR, recently entered the world of retro handheld gaming with his announcement of the ModRetro Chromatic.

The device was unveiled by the entrepreneur through a YouTube video and blog post, causing excitement among fans.

In the video, Luckey stated that the aim was to create the ultimate means of playing Game Boy games. This was not just about creating a new or one of many options, but rather about indisputably providing the very best experience. The goal was to achieve the utmost authenticity and highest quality, resulting in a product that could be passed down for generations as a cherished tribute to the art of gaming.

“One of the most exciting features of Chromatic is its complete compatibility with the entire library of Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.”

The speaker proceeded to elaborate on their efforts to provide a 1:1 experience for the Game Boy Color, which involved finding a screen with the ideal pixel density and color temperature.

The quality of the Chromatic’s construction also appears to be exceptional, featuring a scratch-resistant sapphire screen lens and a durable magnesium alloy shell.

According to him, we created tailor-made elements at each stage, resulting in the ultimate experience for playing Game Boy games.

The ModRetro Chromatic, which has full Game Boy support, has recently been launched, making it one of the first handhelds to do so alongside the Analogue Pocket. It will be intriguing to observe how the two devices compare once the ModRetro Chromatic is fully available.

The ModRetro Chromatic has already reached the hands of popular influencers such as Logan Paul and Casey Neistat, who can be seen playing with the device in the reveal video. For those interested, the device is currently available for pre-order on the ModRetro website and is expected to ship by Christmas 2024.
