One of the original three admirals of the Marine Corps introduced in the series is Kuzan, who is commonly known as Admiral Aokiji. He is recognized for his intelligence and was considered one of the most powerful officers in the Marine Corps. Additionally, he was personally trained by the legendary Marine Hero, Monkey D Garp, and inherited his incredible strength.

When Sengoku contemplated stepping down from his position, the Fleet Admiral, Aokiji, was the chosen successor. However, certain high-ranking officers opposed this decision and instead supported Admiral Akainu as their next leader. As a result, a battle between Akainu and Aokiji was held to determine the new Fleet Admiral.

The fierce conflict between them raged on for ten days, unfolding on Punk Hazard. Ultimately, Admiral Akainu emerged as the victor and was appointed as the new Fleet Admiral of the Marine Corps. In addition to his defeat, Aokiji suffered the loss of one of his legs and ultimately left the Marine Corps.

Upon departing from the Marine Corps, Kuzan aligned himself with the Blackbeard Pirates and was appointed as one of their Ten Titanic Captains. Despite being a former student of Garp, Kuzan engaged in combat with him during the SWORD’s mission to rescue Koby on Hachinose Island. The sudden shift in Kuzan’s actions begs the question of what could have caused such a drastic transformation. The answer may be found in the film that was released following Kuzan’s departure from the Marines.

One Piece Film Z was released as a semi-canon film within the series during the Dressrosa arc. The movie focuses on the story of Zephyr, a former Admiral who had stolen the Dyna Stones, a highly coveted possession of the World Government that was said to be just as powerful as the Ancient Weapons. The Straw Hat Pirates find themselves on Firs Island, where they come across this former Marine and offer their assistance.

The film briefly featured Aokiji, who encountered the Straw Hat Pirates on the island. As anticipated, the Straw Hat Pirates were cautious of him due to their previous encounter at Long Ring Long Land. However, Aokiji disclosed that he had resigned from the Marine Corps.

Upon reaching the bay of the island, Aokiji, the ex-Admiral, made a peculiar statement to the Straw Hat Pirates. He posed the question, do the pirates, as seekers of the One Piece, exist because of the existence of the final treasure, or does the existence of the pirates stem from the promise of a grand treasure awaiting them at the end of the Grand Line?

Despite being a former member of the Marine Corps, Kuzan’s interest in the pirates’ grand treasure was evident in his inability to answer the question at the time. This raised the question of what his ultimate goal could be. It is possible that Kuzan was intrigued by the value of this grand treasure, for which pirates are willing to risk their lives.

Upon seeing the Blackbeard Pirates as the only crew capable of reaching Laugh Tale, he may have chosen to join them. This allowed him to strategize his path to the One Piece, evaluate its value, and ultimately choose between aligning with the pirates or the Marines. This could explain the appearance of his face in chapter 1121.
