The ruler of the World Government, Imu, may have Voodoo and Japanese mythology origins, while their powers could be attributed to Sauron from the Lord of the Rings. Similarly, the Iron Giant’s origins could be linked to Talos from Greek mythology, while the four Gods of the Skypiea Island could represent four different mythologies. This suggests that One Piece is filled with various references and inspirations from different mythologies.
One could argue that the powers of Luffy’s awakened devil fruit and the final saga of One Piece bear a striking resemblance to Keanu Reeves’ The Matrix movie, particularly its first installment.

The Matrix is a science fiction film franchise that debuted in 1999. The first installment featured a talented cast, including renowned Canadian actor Keanu Reeves in the lead role of Thomas Anderson, also known as Neo. The series was helmed by the Wachowskis sisters.
The movie’s plot revolved around the ongoing conflict between Artificial Intelligence and humanity, as the former had confined the latter within a simulation known as the matrix. Throughout the film, Neo is depicted with the ability to transform his surroundings into rubber.
Neo attempts to touch a mirror in the film, but it transforms into rubber causing his fingers to rebound. Later, he tries to leap from a building but is unsuccessful and lands on the road. However, rather than sustaining injuries, the road transforms into rubber and he bounces back. This could suggest that Neo’s abilities may have influenced the awakened devil fruit possessed by Monkey D. Luffy.
During his battle with Kaido, Luffy unlocked the powers of his devil fruit, the legendary Zoan Human-Human fruit. This granted him the power to turn his surroundings into rubber, similar to Neo.
After being freed from the Matrix, Cypher becomes conflicted as he is drawn back to the luxurious lifestyle he had within the Matrix. Despite his initial escape, he ultimately betrays the Nebuchadnezzar, the protagonist’s group, by aiding Agent Smith, a powerful program within the Matrix. This can be seen as a parallel to York, the traitor of Egghead Island, who also desired to attain the status of a Celestial Dragon and live a life of indulgence.
Finally, the Architect is responsible for creating and controlling all the agents, such as Agent Smith, who were programmed by the Matrix to stop humans from escaping. Similar to the current speculation among fans, the Architect and the agents can be compared to Imu and the Five Elders who are currently battling on Egghead under Imu’s orders.

Released in 2003, Animatrix is an anime film that draws inspiration from The Matrix’s universe. This animated feature makes numerous allusions to the enigmatic world of One Piece, with references such as the eye of Imu representing AI’s all-seeing gaze and the B1-66-ER robot symbolizing the enhanced humans crafted by the German 66 group. Oda’s influence is apparent throughout the movie, as it is brimming with nods to his work.
The most perplexing allusion appears to be the moment in the movie where an apple is transformed into a brain, which bears similarities to the scene in One Piece where an apple transforms into a devil fruit.
The location of Dr. Vegapunk’s message broadcast may have been revealed to One Piece fans through his introduction.
