Hideki Kamiya’s underappreciated gem, Okami, is set to receive a long-awaited sequel. This exciting news was unveiled at the 2024 Game Awards, nearly two decades following the original game’s debut in 2006.
The iconic Okami, developed by the now-defunct Studio Clover, captured the hearts of gamers worldwide. Under the direction of Hideki Kamiya—who later went on to create the Bayonetta series and establish Platinum Games—the title remains a hallmark of creativity and artistry in the gaming industry.
A Canine Classic Returns
This year’s Game Awards further solidified Okami‘s legendary status with the reveal of its sequel, enhanced by a live orchestra performing the beloved soundtrack that fans cherish. This nostalgic touch adds depth to the excitement surrounding this highly anticipated return.
The trailer showcased a significant visual upgrade from the original’s stylized paintbrush aesthetic. Viewers were treated to a stunning scene of Amaterasu, the titular wolf deity, emerging from a dark forest into a vibrant field, heralding a new chapter in this godlike video game saga.
It’s been 18 years since the first iteration graced the PlayStation 2, and in 2010, a handheld sequel of sorts was released for the Nintendo DS. However, that edition did not develop the same fanfare, failing to live up to the original’s legacy.
Kamiya had long harbored ideas for a sequel to Okami, but the closure of Clover Studios cast doubt on its realization. Now, nearly two decades later, fans, including this writer, are finally poised to experience what they’ve eagerly awaited.
The sequel to Okami is being co-developed by multiple studios, as detailed on the official Capcom website. Notably, M-TWO Inc., Machine Head Works Inc., and CLOVERS Inc.—the latter includes Hideki Kamiya among its ranks—are all contributing to this project, tapping into the original team’s creative legacy.
While further details regarding gameplay and storyline remain scarce, if the sequel closely mirrors its predecessor, players can anticipate an enchanting soundtrack, innovative gameplay mechanics, and a gripping narrative that promises to resonate deeply.
