Old Concept Art Reveals Overwatch 2 Season 14 ‘Phreak’ Tank Hero

As teased at the conclusion of the Season 13 trailer, Overwatch 2 is set to introduce a new tank hero, and players are already piecing together hints regarding their identity through early concept artwork.

Before October 9, little was known about the tank hero featured in Season 14, apart from a placeholder image showcased during BlizzCon 2023.

The recent Season 13 trailer, however, has shed light on the matter, while simultaneously posing further inquiries.

In the final scenes of the trailer, a damaged Oasis University backdrop was displayed, with the camera zooming in on a wall marked with the word ‘PHREAKS’ inscribed in graffiti.

A voice with a distinct Scottish accent remarks, “It’s looking like a revolution,” towards the end of the trailer.

Interestingly, players quickly realized that the term Phreaks or Phreak has appeared in Overwatch before. Its initial mention can be traced back to earlier concept art from the game’s original development phase as an MMO called Titan.

This concept art outlines potential abilities for the hero, including cannon, stomp, and attract. However, it’s important to remain skeptical about these placeholders since the concepts originate from nearly a decade ago and significant changes are likely.

Notably, as emphasized by the creator Bro You Wack, Phreaks may represent a newly emerging faction within the game, something that has been subtly integrated into the lore.

The label Phreaks can also be seen on a punk-inspired character’s jacket from artwork depicting the Omnic Crisis during the civil unrest in Paris.

“They could either be named ‘Phreak’ or be associated with a gang known as ‘Phreaks’. This gang identifier is displayed on the jacket alongside references to the ‘revolution’ in the Overwatch setting of Paris,” he remarked.

Fans will not have to wait long for more information about this enigmatic new character. Following the introduction of Mauga, the developers have permitted players an early look at upcoming characters prior to their official release, allowing for balance testing.

Although we might need to hold out until mid-Season 13 for further insights, additional hints may surface once the new season kicks off on October 15.
