One Big Bang Theory scene “hits harder” after George’s death

Following George’s tragic passing in Young Sheldon, viewers have been revisiting a particular moment in The Big Bang Theory and noting that it now resonates even more deeply than before.

From the start of Young Sheldon, it was common knowledge that George had passed away. In the show, the adult version of Jim Parson’s character reveals that George died at the age of 14. However, no one, including the show’s creator, could have predicted the immense love and adoration the world would have for him.

During Season 7 Episode 12, the Coopers bid farewell to George without realizing it would be their last time seeing him. Tragically, he suffered a heart attack and passed away later that day, leaving his loved ones devastated. Missy, Mary, and Meemaw were overcome with tears, while Sheldon remained silent and appeared emotionally drained.

According to Chuck Lorre, the passing of his father deeply affected his childhood and continued to impact his life. The loss of his father, George, also meant that he missed out on important moments shared between a father and son in his adult years. This emotional void is portrayed in a poignant scene in The Big Bang Theory.

In the ninth episode of Season 7, titled ‘The Thanksgiving Decoupling’, the group visits Howard’s mother’s home for their Thanksgiving dinner. Howard faces difficulties in bonding with his father-in-law Mike, but surprisingly finds a connection with Sheldon instead. They bond over memories of playing football in Dallas during a previous Thanksgiving.

Mike confesses to Sheldon that he was extremely frustrated with the game and even considered shooting the television. Surprisingly, Sheldon reveals that his father had actually done this in the past. However, Mike soon learns that Sheldon’s father had passed away during his teenage years, preventing him from ever sharing a beer with his dad (except for the one time he attempted to give him one for his high school graduation at the young age of 11).

“Well, you’ll have one with me,”Mike says, popping open the can and handing it to Sheldon, who graciously accepts. “Here’s to your dad,”he says, and they both take a sip.

The latest episode of Young Sheldon prompted one user to share a clip on Reddit, stating that the scene with Bernie’s dad always makes them emotional. The user also mentioned that the scene resonates with others who have lost a father figure, as it brings up a lot of emotions.

“Although I have my doubts about it happening, it would be amazing if the show ended with adult Sheldon and George having a drink together, and the actor who portrayed Mike Rostenkowski as the bartender,”another person expressed. “This scene carries even more weight now,”a third person added.

“I am consistently impressed by Sheldon’s impeccable behavior in this moment. He refrained from uttering a single word that could have ruined it and simply went along with the situation,”a fourth commenter shared. “I admire how Sheldon recognized the importance of ‘having a beer with your dad’, even though he himself may not care for alcohol. He showed great respect to Bernie’s father,”a fifth individual added.

Young Sheldon Season 7 will be airing on CBS until May 16, 2024. In the meantime, there are plenty of other excellent TV shows to stream this month.
