Following the news of The Acolyte’s cancellation, there has been a range of responses from Star Wars fans online. However, the majority of those who have spoken out are expressing their frustration with the show’s tease of Darth Plagueis.
The Acolyte was known for introducing Darth Plagueis in live-action for the first time. Plagueis, who had previously only been seen in novels and mentioned in Revenge of the Sith, is the mentor of Darth Sidious, who would go on to become the main antagonist of the franchise, Emperor Palpatine.
Despite its briefness, the Plagueis tease leaves much to be desired as it is unclear whether he truly appeared or if it was merely a Force-induced illusion. However, it was undoubtedly a hint at something greater, though the unexpected cancellation of The Acolyte suggests that we may never uncover the truth.
Currently, angered Star Wars enthusiasts are disappointed by the apparent insignificance of the tease, as they believe The Acolyte’s cancellation has prematurely concluded the storyline before it could fully develop.
Expressing his frustration with the tease, one fan stated in a post on the Star Wars subreddit, “I suppose this is not leading anywhere anymore.”
Darth Plagueis’ brief live-action debut has only proven to be more disappointing for Star Wars fans.
Many fans are not primarily disappointed by the Plagueis tease, but rather by the potential it held for Season 2. One fan expressed, “The introduction of sith elements was intriguing, Qimir was a great addition, and yet the focus shifted to the twins and witches, leaving the sith storyline on hold for an extended period of time.”
Despite some fans being disappointed by his absence, others are relieved that he did not appear more frequently. One fan expressed their opinion, stating, “I’m glad he didn’t show up more. The writing and acting were lackluster and uninteresting. I would love to see Plagueis, as the book was fantastic, but I have concerns about the people behind Acolyte being responsible for it.”
Despite the swift cancellation of The Acolyte, some still hold onto hope. While many have adopted a defeatist attitude, a few have pointed out the possibility of Plagueis returning.
“A fan pointed out that there is nothing preventing the show from telling this story. Although we only saw a brief 25-second glimpse of a character in a cave, many praise Manny Jacinto’s performance as Qimir/The Stranger and believe the show would be wise to utilize some of its content to tell his story.”
“Another fan commented on the incredible attachment people have to 10 seconds of fan service, suggesting that it is indeed possible to tell an equally if not more captivating story through alternate methods.”
Despite the disappointment many fans felt with the sequel trilogy, it is not the first time that Star Wars has addressed controversial topics. Despite the negative reception causing a pause in big-screen Star Wars productions, there are plans for a new film centered around the character of Rey Skywalker.
Despite the frustration of fans, there remains a possibility that Disney will delve into the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise.
