One of the Elden Ring DLC’s new weapons is a Monster Hunter Easter egg

One of the new weapons in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is actually a hidden Easter egg that pays tribute to the Monster Hunter franchise.

The challenging difficulty of Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has captured the attention of gamers everywhere, but it has also caused frustration for some. Even popular streamer Asmongold has been taken aback by the unexpected level of challenge presented in the DLC.

Shadow of the Erdtree offers a lot for fans of the base game, as long as you are willing to rise to the occasion. The eight new weapon types have taken build crafting to new heights and are especially impressive.

One exciting aspect is that one of the recently added weapons in Shadow of the Erdtree pays tribute to another well-known and challenging game series. The addition of the Great Katana is a clear reference to the iconic Longsword from Monster Hunter.

AsagiKurosagi, an initial discoverer of the Shadow of the Erdtree’s Great Katana, shared a clip showcasing its light combo that closely resembles a popular sequence of moves from the Longsword in Monster Hunter. The comparison was made by the user on their profile at https://x.com/AsagiKurosagi, and the recreation is nearly flawless.

If that wasn’t convincing enough, the Great Katana also features its own version of the Longsword’s Fade Slash, which allows the wielder to attack and dodge simultaneously. Executing a heavy attack with a Great Katana and pressing the dodge button in Elden Ring will activate the Fade Slash.

The connection between the Great Katana and the Longsword is strengthened by the fact that the input for the Fade Slash in Monster Hunter is exactly the same. In fact, some users have even joked about the Longsword being favored in the game. In reference to this, one player humorously commented, “Longsword players get everything. They even have their weapon featured in a completely different game.”

As we come across this cleverly hidden Easter egg, we can’t help but question if there are any other nods to Monster Hunter in Shadow of the Erddtree. Perhaps it’s time to give the Backhand Blades a closer examination.
