One Piece has a reputation for incorporating characters into the plot long after they are first introduced. This recurring element of the series was highlighted in One Piece chapter 1121, which delighted fans by reintroducing Alber “King,”Kaido’s former right-hand man. In the Wano Arc, King utilized his innate abilities as a Lunarian to battle against Roronoa Zoro.
Despite being cornered by King and tested by his own sword, Zoro was able to tap into his latent potential and unleash his true Haki powers. He utilized advanced versions of Armament and Conqueror’s Haki to strike King with a powerful attack, ultimately defeating him. However, a week later, while still recovering from his injuries, King encountered Navy Admiral Ryokugyu who easily overpowered him.
Despite this, fans speculated that King would continue to have a role in One Piece, given his Lunarian heritage and its connection to the main storyline. The confirmation of King’s survival in One Piece chapter 1121 raises curiosity about his potential future actions.
Note: The following article contains significant spoilers from chapter 1121 of the One Piece manga.
Possible foreshadowing of King’s redemption in One Piece chapter 1121
The history of the sole surviving Lunarian
King, also known by his birth name Alber, was born 47 years prior to the current events in the One Piece story. As a member of the Lunarians, he possesses the distinctive physical traits of his race, such as black feathered wings, white hair, dark skin, and the natural ability to ignite themselves and produce powerful flames.
By controlling the flame on their backs, Lunarians were able to increase their durability and withstand incredibly powerful attacks without sustaining any injuries. They also had the ability to decrease the flame, allowing them to gain a sudden and significant speed boost. These remarkable abilities solidified the Lunarians’ reputation as invincible gods who could endure any challenge.
Intrigued by Alber’s god-like abilities, the World Government seized the young child and held him captive in order to assess his Lunarian powers. Kaido was greatly impressed by Alber’s abilities and ultimately decided to enlist him as his right-hand man.
Despite Alber’s remarkable fighting abilities, Kaido bestowed upon him the title of “King”. As time passed, Kaido would ascend to the ranks of the Four Emperors, with King remaining by his side as his most powerful and devoted subordinate.
During the Wano Arc, King demonstrated his immense strength by single-handedly repelling the ship of the Big Mom Pirates, rendering even Smoothie, Perospero, and Big Mom unable to retaliate. He then easily defeated Sanji, who was wearing a Raid Suit, and joined forces with his fellow crewmate Queen to face off against Marco. Working together, King and Queen managed to exhaust most of Marco’s powers, while sustaining minimal injuries themselves.
King faced off against Roronoa Zoro, the second-in-command of the Straw Hat Pirates and known for his strength. The intense battle between the two powerful fighters was fueled by their loyalty to their respective captains. Despite Zoro’s powerful attacks, King, utilizing his Lunarian abilities, was able to withstand the onslaught, even though they were strong enough to cause serious harm to Kaido’s formidable body.
To defeat King’s incredible durability, Zoro needed to comprehend the Lunarian abilities possessed by his opponent and enhance his own destructive capabilities. After realizing the untapped strength within himself, Zoro mastered the use of Conqueror’s Haki and combined it with Armament Haki to create a powerful new Haki-based form.
As a result of this significant power increase, Zoro’s strength reached a whole new level, allowing him to surpass King. Despite the Lunarian’s use of his strongest attack, a massive dragon-shaped fire blast, Zoro was able to overpower it with his own technique.
Despite being surrounded by Haki that crackled with black lightning, Zoro managed to defeat King, bringing him down once and for all. In the process, he also sliced off one of King’s wings and shattered his sword, which was infused with Armament Haki.
In the future, King, Queen, and a few lower-ranking members of the Beasts Pirates encountered Marine Admiral Ryokugyu in Wano. However, King and Queen were still recovering from their previous injuries and were not at full strength, which proved to be unfortunate for them.
Despite being completely covered in bandages and debilitated to the point of almost being immobile, King was unable to use his Lunarian abilities or Zoan Devil Fruit transformation, let alone at their full potential. While Queen was not as severely weakened as King, it was clear that both of them were no match for the Admiral in their current state.
By utilizing his Wood-Wood Fruit, Ryokugyu expertly impaled Queen and siphoned all of the fluids from his body. Following a brief altercation, the Admiral successfully apprehended King and left him bound in his Devil Fruit-empowered vines. Since then, King has remained absent in the series until his unexpected return in One Piece chapter 1121.
What is King doing now?
In One Piece chapter 1121, King is seen responding to Vegapunk’s message. He remains silent, carefully listening to the scientist’s words and reflecting on the time when he first learned of the World Government’s offer of 100 million Berries for any information on a surviving Lunarian.
After his brief struggle with Admiral Ryokugyu, King is still covered in bandages as he was before. It is probable that he is still healing from the injuries inflicted by Zoro. The chapter does not disclose King’s current whereabouts, as he is shown in a panel with a plain black background.
Despite the dark room, it is a pleasure to see King, as his character is notable for his unique design, powers, backgrounds, and connections to the lore of One Piece. However, no further assumptions can be made about his current situation.
The disappearance of the Lunarian race remains shrouded in mystery, but it is widely believed that the World Government is to blame for their almost total eradication. It would be intriguing to witness a flashback of those events through the eyes of King.
King’s unwavering belief in Joy Boy is evident as he claims to be patiently awaiting his return. Whether this same level of faith was shared among the rest of the Lunarian race remains unclear, but it certainly adds an interesting element to King’s potential future redemption.
Perhaps not by chance, One Piece’s writer Eiichiro Oda had King hear Vegapunk’s message, which revealed the tension between Joy Boy and the World Government, along with the sinister plans of this organization.
King’s unwavering loyalty to Kaido has never faltered, even when faced with the tempting offer from Big Mom to join her crew. Even in his last moments before being defeated by Zoro, King’s thoughts were solely on his allegiance to Kaido. The same loyalty was reciprocated by the Yonko, as he too thought of King before succumbing to Luffy. However, with Kaido now assumed to have met his demise, King must search for a new purpose in his life.
One Piece chapter 1121 reaffirmed the correlation between the races decimated by the World Government, namely the Lunarians, Buccaneers, and Three-Eyed, and the ongoing war that originated during the Void Century. Vegapunk’s dialogue suggests that these three races were eradicated due to their alliance with Joy Boy.
Despite the annihilation of these tribes, their descendants continue to exist. The ultimate battle against Imu-sama, the Five Elders, and their followers is inevitable, and those who have faith in Joy Boy will likely unite against them, teaming up with the Straw Hats and their allies.
One Piece has recently delved into Bonney’s quest to find Nika, and like a true Joy Boy follower, King shares the belief in the “Sun God”. In fact, King has dedicated his entire life to anticipating the return of Joy Boy. Interestingly, Luffy, the captain of the individual who vanquished him in Wano, is the prophesied reincarnation of Joy Boy.
Despite his villainous actions throughout his life, King’s motives were driven by his loyalty to Kaido, whom he believed to be Joy Boy. Constantly pursued by the World Government, he was never able to live a normal life and was forced to conceal his true identity and remain cautious around others.
King Could Help the Straw Hats in the Final War
In One Piece, many antagonists have transformed into allies or even heroes for the Straw Hat Pirates. The roster includes familiar names like Hatchan, Bon Clay, Galdino, Boa Hancock, Bellamy, and others. Surprisingly, even notorious enemies like Buggy, Crocodile, and Daz Bonez have temporarily assisted Luffy. Additionally, Franky and Nico Robin have permanently joined the Straw Hats, solidifying their roles as integral members of the crew.
Therefore, it would be extremely difficult for King to become an ally. Being the second strongest member of the Beasts Pirates, a crew led by a Yonko, his fighting abilities would be incredibly valuable. King’s name is derived from the top-ranking playing card, which aligns with the Beasts Pirates’ naming convention and highlights his significant position as second in command after Kaido.
Despite Zoro’s impressive display of strength against Kaido and Big Mom, King of Wano was able to match him in battle. Zoro’s struggle with his sword Enma may have contributed to his disadvantage, allowing King to gain the upper hand. However, King ultimately fell to Zoro’s use of Advanced Conqueror’s Haki, a rare power among the characters in One Piece.
While many fighters lack this ultimate ability, they would struggle against King and his remarkably destructive flames. He possesses the power to freely generate and control them, allowing him to unleash devastating attacks from any distance. This earned him the nickname “Wildfire,”as his flames are comparable to molten lava. Therefore, it can be assumed that King’s flames are superior to those granted by the Flame-Flame Fruit.
The immense strength of King’s final attack, fueled by his massive magma dragon form, was no match for Zoro’s own technique. However, it is undeniable that it was a formidable strike. Along with the ability to fly at great speeds, King can also utilize his Ancient Zoan powers to deliver devastating blows that can decimate large portions of Onigashima. He can even amplify his speed by temporarily extinguishing his flames.
Despite his defeat, King’s speed, mobility, powerful attacks, and exceptional durability make him a formidable force. These qualities, coupled with his valuable Lunarian powers, were utilized to enhance the Seraphim cyborgs. In fact, even Luffy, a Yonko-level fighter, compared their durability to that of Kaido thanks to King’s DNA.
The incredible efficacy of the Lunarian race’s abilities is highlighted here. It would be truly remarkable to witness the King utilizing them in the ultimate battle against a top-ranking member of the World Government, without being weakened as he was when facing Admiral Ryokugyu.
