Garling serves as the Commander of the Holy Knights and is rumored to be Shanks’ father. The youthful depiction of Garling bears a strong resemblance to Shanks, lending weight to this theory. Nevertheless, while Shanks is characterized by his red hair, Garling features a slightly grayish-blonde hairstyle.
This has raised concerns among fans regarding potential design errors. However, considering Garling’s advanced age, this hair color isn’t particularly surprising. Additionally, a glimpse of young Garling appears in the God Valley flashback, which could eventually clarify any uncertainties for fans.

“Was not expecting him to be blonde,” commented one fan.
Another fan noted, “Was expecting the red hair though.”
“In many instances, red hair can fade to blonde with age, not gray. Thus, his blonde hair does not eliminate a possible relation to Shanks; in fact, it could support it further,” stated a third fan.
“His hair wasn’t illustrated with tone stickers in the manga like Shanks. It was clear for him not to have red hair entirely, but many seem to have missed that,” added a fourth fan.
Several fans have been attributing blame to Toei for the interpretation of Garling’s hair. However, one fan explained, “It’s amusing how people claim Toei ruined the colors, considering we never had Garling’s color scheme before this. I always assumed that Garling didn’t have red hair since his hair wasn’t shaded like Shanks’.”
