One Piece chapter 1113, which was released on April 29, 2024, will be on hiatus for the next week in observance of Golden Week in Japan. This pause may be particularly challenging for devoted fans of the series, as they eagerly await further developments following the reveals in this chapter.
Although fans were eager to learn the ‘truth of the world’ from Vegapunk in this chapter, they were only given a glimpse of it – that the world would eventually be submerged in water. However, the most surprising revelation came when Vegapunk confessed to committing two sins.
Sadly, he chose not to disclose the sins he had committed, leaving the fandom perplexed. It is possible that these sins are connected to his collaboration with the World Government, as hinted at by his dialogue in the episode.
This article includes the author’s personal opinion and may contain spoilers from the One Piece manga series.
Exploring the Two Sins Mentioned by Vegapunk in One Piece Chapter 1113
As stated in One Piece chapter 1113, the chapter begins with Saint Marcus stumbling upon Vegapunk’s enormous brain and attempting to destroy a Transponder Snail that turned out to be a decoy. He quickly escaped and apologized to his fellow comrades for failing to uncover Vegapunk’s true source of power.
The attention then turned towards Bonney, who was under attack from Saint Nusjuro. As the Gorosei attempted to intervene, they were kicked away by Sanji. Saint Nusjuro also went after Sanji, but Oima and Kashii came to his rescue. Utilizing her devil fruit abilities, Bonney enlarged herself and fought back against Nusjuro. In the meantime, Saint Saturn approached Robin and recognized her from the Ohara incident, launching an attack. However, Robin’s fellow Straw Hat crew members swiftly came to her aid.
As the chapter came to a close, he revealed that the world would eventually be submerged in the sea, leaving the Grand Line astonished.
Based on the text, it can be inferred that Vegapunk’s two “sins”refer to actions that are deemed ethically unacceptable. He stated that he would face execution for his transgressions, not his sins, suggesting that both of his transgressions may be connected to his alliance with the World Government.
Vegapunk’s first sinful act may have been his experimentation on Kuma, the Buccaneer. Kuma’s daughter, Bonney, had been diagnosed with a terminal disease known as ‘The Sapphire Scales.’ In a desperate attempt to save her, Kuma sought out the help of the brilliant scientist Vegapunk, who was employed by the World Government due to his need for funding. This decision was influenced by Dragon, known for his revolutionary actions against the government.
Vegapunk was amazed to find that the Buccaneer, an extinct species, was still alive and believed he could cure Bonney with a stem-cell transplant. As a scientist, he was fascinated by Kuma’s body and offered to exchange Bonney’s translated charge for the opportunity to use Kuma’s body for cloning. Kuma agreed eagerly, however, things did not go as planned for Vegapunk.
Vegapunk utilized Kuma’s body to develop the Pacifista Prototypes, but his progress was halted by Saint Saturn. The latter had a strong dislike for Kuma and imposed additional conditions for Bonney’s diagnosis. Saint Saturn demanded that Kuma become a warlord and have his memories erased. This greatly angered Vegapunk, who was against violating Kuma’s human rights. However, he had no power to object as the words of the Five Elders were considered unquestionable.
Despite this, Kuma ultimately conceded to Saturn’s conditions, leading to Bonney being taken as both a hostage and a means of appeasement. During his final moments, Vegapunk vehemently pleaded with the Five Elders to preserve his memories and refrain from implanting a self-destruct command. However, all of his appeals were rejected by the Five Elders.
Despite knowing that his memories were about to be removed, Kuma still had one final request for Vegapunk. He asked that his body be used to protect the Going Sunny until the Straw Hats returned. In a moment of gratitude, Kuma also thanked Vegapunk for saving Boneey. However, this caused Vegapunk to break down in hysterical tears, realizing the consequences of his actions in separating a father and daughter in his pursuit for knowledge.
It is believed that one of Vegapunk’s greatest transgressions was the creation of the Mother Flame, an innovative energy source. While the purpose behind its creation remains a mystery, many fans theorize that it was intended to be a non-hazardous power source for the treacherous Grand Line or to fuel the formidable Iron Giant.
Regrettably, Egghead Island’s traitor, York, betrayed the island by providing a sample of Mother Flame to the World Government. The government then used it to power a weapon, which fans speculate to be an ancient weapon, and destroyed the island where Lulusia Kingdom resided. Impressed by the results, the World Government relied on York for a steady supply. However, around this time, the Straw Hat Pirates managed to capture her.
Vegapunk was a member of MADS, where he focused on developing products that promoted peace. In contrast, his colleagues Queen, Vinsmoke Judge, and Ceaser Clown were primarily dedicated to researching weapons of mass destruction.
Despite never intending for it to happen, Vegapunk may have been disappointed to learn that the energy source he created was ultimately used to destroy an entire island. This could possibly be considered Vegapunk’s second mistake.
