According to spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1117, several familiar characters will make a return, however, the fate of Garp remains uncertain.
Currently, One Piece is approaching the climax of the Egghead Arc, but there are still some unresolved matters. Among them is Garp’s status, which has been a mystery for some time. Chapter 1117 only adds to the confusion surrounding this topic.
In Chapter 1088, Garp made his final appearance in the story. Alongside the SWORD members, he journeyed to Hachinosu in an attempt to save Koby from the clutches of the Blackbeard Pirates. However, their mission quickly went awry as they encountered several powerful Titanic Captains, including the former admiral known as Aokiji or Kuzan.
Despite being one of the strongest characters in One Piece, Garp had little trouble dealing with the captains. However, when it came to facing Kuzan, a former admiral and skilled Logia user, the veteran vice-admiral found himself in a tough battle.
The iconic battle between them became even more significant when it was uncovered that Garp had trained Kuzan in the past. Despite the intensity of the fight, the elderly man ultimately met defeat. In their last encounter, readers witnessed him lying on the ground with an icicle piercing his chest, surrounded by the other Titanic Captains.
Despite the ambiguity surrounding his fate, the manga has yet to provide any clarity on what became of him. The characters and readers remain unaware of whether he has perished. Some fans continue to hold onto hope that he has survived, as One Piece tends to spare its characters from death. However, the recent events of Chapter 1117 have caused doubts to arise about his ultimate fate.
Despite having several opportunities to make an appearance, Vice-Admiral Garp is noticeably absent in the new chapter. However, old characters such as Don Krieg, Gin, and Pearl do reappear, and Hachinosu is also featured, but there is no mention of the vice-admiral.
Despite not being able to complete his message, Vegapunk’s transmission is ultimately cut off in the chapter. However, he does manage to directly speak to those individuals whose names contain the letter “D”. The manga later reveals that key characters such as Dragon and Blackbeard possess this letter in their names, while Sabo takes the place of Luffy and Ace, and Bepo substitutes for Trafalgar Law. In the case of Garp, this role is assumed by Koby instead.
It is possible that Garp’s absence in this panel could indicate one of two things: either he is currently imprisoned on Hachinosu and unable to hear the broadcast, or he has passed away. Based on One Piece’s track record of sparing major characters, it is more likely that the former scenario is true.
While there has been a notable death in the Egghead Arc, as Vegapunk was killed by Saturn, one of the Gorosei, it is improbable that another significant character like Garp would meet the same fate, particularly without being shown on screen. However, we cannot be certain until the manga reveals his fate.
This week, One Piece makes its return, bringing with it the highly-anticipated Chapter 1117. This chapter will feature the long-awaited fight and also hint at a closer bond between Sabo and Luffy. Fans can mark their calendars for the release date of June 16, 2024.
