Over the weekend, fans were thrilled to see the official release of One Piece chapter 1117, which marks the beginning of the Straw Hats’ escape from Egghead Island. Although some members and allies of the crew have not yet boarded a ship, it is evident that they will soon depart the island and conclude the Egghead arc.
Despite this, the Gorosei’s attention was primarily diverted to the Iron Giant in One Piece chapter 1117, as they split away from the group. In doing so, they appeared to acknowledge the Iron Giant as the same ancient robot that had attacked Mariejois around 200 years earlier in the series.
One intriguing aspect of One Piece chapter 1117 is Saint Marcus Mars’ conversation about the ancient robot, in which he confidently states that it is the same one from 200 years ago. This statement has sparked theories among fans that Oda may have hinted at the immortality of the Gorosei, a topic that has long been discussed in the community.
One Piece chapter 1117’s dialogue and potential foreshadowing of the reveal of the Gorosei’s immortality may be misleading fans.
Clearly, Saint Mars’ strong emphasis on his certainty of this fact in One Piece chapter 1117 is what is ultimately guiding readers to reach this conclusion. This is not surprising, given that the pause he takes before stating it is reminiscent of the disbelief one might feel upon unexpectedly encountering a long-lost classmate. Although the exact tone is not easily discernible, the word “certain”is highlighted in bold in the text to emphasize Mars’ conviction in this statement.
However, it is equally challenging to argue that this is concrete evidence of their immortality. This uncertainty arises from the possibility that Mars and the other Gorosei may have only heard the story from Imu or their predecessors.
Similarly, just as Dr. Vegapunk learned about the Iron Giant through word of mouth from his fellow scientists and predecessors, it is possible that the Gorosei also gained knowledge of the Iron Giant in the same manner.
Additionally, according to fans’ observations, in One Piece chapter 1117, Mars appears to be the only one speaking on the matter, with no input from the other members of the Gorosei. Therefore, it can be argued that the chapter only hints at Mars’ immortality, rather than implying that all of the Gorosei members are immortal. This assumption is based on the assumption that the chapter is indeed teasing their immortality. However, it cannot be ruled out that the other members are also immortal, but chapter 1117 does not explicitly suggest this.
Despite this, the group’s abilities have consistently demonstrated a level of equal strength, indicating that immortality would also follow suit. All members of the group, except for one, have been verified as users of Conqueror’s Haki and have been introduced as possessing “yokai”abilities rather than Devil Fruit powers.
It is evident that there are strong arguments supporting both sides. While Chapter 1117 presents solid evidence for the Gorosei’s immortality, it also has flaws in the way it is portrayed and conflicts with the known history of the Iron Giant. Additionally, the uniform display of power among the Gorosei implies that if one is immortal, then they all are. It is hoped that the series will provide a conclusive answer to this matter in the near future.
