In the ongoing Egghead Arc of One Piece, Jewelry Bonney holds a significant role. Despite possessing a Devil Fruit ability that makes her appear as a young adult woman, Bonney is actually a 12-year-old girl. Two years prior to the current events in One Piece, Bartholomew Kuma made the selfless decision to become a cyborg in the service of the World Government in order to save Bonney from a debilitating illness.
As Kuma’s adoptive daughter, Bonney has an immense love for him. This sense of gratitude motivated her to become a pirate and search for Kuma, until they were finally reunited during the Egghead Incident. It is important to mention that Bonney’s ability to control the Age-Age Fruit was obtained through an experiment conducted by Saint Jaygarcia Saturn.
Thanks to her Paramecia-type power, Bonney has complete control over the aging of both living and non-living objects, including her own body. This is demonstrated in One Piece chapter 1118, where she showcases the amazing capabilities of the Age-Age Fruit by mimicking Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation. As the “Sun God”Nika, she is able to transform herself just like the leader of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Please be aware that this article includes significant spoilers from Chapter 1118 of the One Piece manga.
Nika joins Luffy in One Piece chapter 1118
Despite Saint V. Nusjuro being occupied with battling Roronoa Zoro, the remaining Gorosei all joined forces to confront the Ancient Robot and halt the transmission of Vegapunk’s message. At the same time, Luffy was reunited with Sanji, Franky, and Bonney, who had managed to board one of the Giant’s ships.
Bonney had successfully defeated Vice Admiral Doll and Vice Admiral Bluegrass by using her Devil Fruit power to reduce them to powerless children. Upon boarding the ship, Luffy immediately raided the kitchen and devoured a massive amount of food to replenish his strength.
As Saint Mars landed a powerful blow on the ship, the Giants just managed to defend against it. In response, Luffy leapt into action and activated his Gear 5 form. Before launching his attack, Luffy urged Bonney to join him, but she declined, stating that she couldn’t keep up with his flashy transformation.
After Luffy laughed, he encouraged her by expressing his confidence in her ability to accomplish the task. His words reminded Bonney of when he spoke to her about Gear 5 being the ultimate symbol of freedom. She also recalled the promise made by Kuma to take her in as his daughter, a sincere pledge he had made in front of Ginny’s resting place.
Seconds later, Bonney activated her Age-Age Fruit ability, Distorted Future, to transform into Nika, mirroring Luffy’s appearance. The transformation was flawless, replicating every aspect of Luffy’s Gear 5, from the white curly hair and white clothes to the ring-shaped eye pupils and floating white clouds surrounding her body.
As they laughed with great enthusiasm, Luffy and Bonney both charged towards Saint Mars, while Saint Warcury and Saint Ju Peter also made their way towards the scene.
An unpredictable Devil Fruit power
Despite her achievements in One Piece chapter 1118, it was already evident that Bonney possessed great potential thanks to the Age-Age Fruit. This was further solidified by her inclusion as one of the Eleven Supernovas of the Worst Generation, solidifying her fame.
Even though she is a young girl in her early tween years, she has proven herself to be able to rival much older and more seasoned opponents. While Bonney may not have the same fighting prowess as characters like Luffy, Zoro, or Law, her possession of the Age-Age Fruit still makes her a formidable opponent. All things considered, she should not be underestimated.
Through manipulating the aging process of her targets, Bonney has the power to change both organic and inorganic materials. She can use this ability on living beings to either rapidly accelerate or decelerate their age, transforming them into elderly individuals or vulnerable children. As a result, she renders them harmless.
To utilize her Devil Fruit powers, Bonney must make physical contact with a person. However, the effects of her age manipulation are temporary and can be potentially countered or halted by skilled Haki wielders.
Bonney has the ability to utilize the unique abilities of the Age-Age Fruit through weapons or by causing objects to corrode through the aging process. She can also manipulate her own age to hide her true identity, gain access to restricted areas, or improve her physical appearance.
With Distorted Future, Bonney turns imagination into reality like Nika
Undoubtedly, the most remarkable ability of the Age-Age Fruit is Distorted Future. By utilizing this technique, Bonney can transform herself into an alternate future version, causing her physical appearance to change accordingly. The results of Distorted Future are determined by Bonney’s imagination.
For example, Bonney has the ability to transform her appearance into a future where she resembles a Buccaneer, with a strong and muscular physique. This is possible because she is familiar with the physical characteristics of a Buccaneer from her adoptive father, Kuma, who belongs to the same race.
Similarly, utilizing Kuma’s accounts of Nika, Bonney employed Distorted Future to transform herself into a different future where she possesses a body resembling the famed “Sun God”with rubber-like properties. This granted her the ability to create an enlarged arm resembling Luffy’s Gear 3.
After encountering the Giants during the Egghead Incident, Bonney utilized her technique to once again alter her age. This resulted in her gaining a significantly larger build, resembling that of an Elbaf warrior. It is evident at this point that Bonney’s Devil Fruit abilities surpass simple age manipulation, as she is capable of transforming into any form she desires.
As long as Bonney holds onto the possibility in her mind, she has the power to transform the future into a tangible reality through the sheer force of her desires. By envisioning something and holding unwavering belief in it, she can bring it to fruition in a parallel timeline, almost like an alternate universe.
It should be noted that Bonney’s ability extends beyond simply mimicking appearances. She is also capable of replicating the specific features of an intended alternate future version, as demonstrated when she enlarged and elongated her arm to strike at Alpha.
Despite the temporary nature, Bonney is able to manifest her desires and turn her imagination into reality, much like Luffy does when he transforms into his Gear 5 form. However, Luffy’s abilities far surpass hers as he has fully mastered his Devil Fruit powers and can even combine them with the advanced forms of all three types of Haki, including the Color of Conqueror.
It is worth mentioning that in One Piece, chapter 1118, Bonney’s actions are the result of a lengthy journey. After viewing Kuma’s memories, Bonney began to hold Luffy in high regard as she learned of Kuma’s faith in him. However, it was not until later that she fully comprehended the extent to which Luffy embodied Nika while utilizing Gear 5.
Upon connecting the dots, Bonney came to the realization that there was a connection between Luffy’s white transformation and the characteristics of Nika. It was then that Vegapunk revealed that the young pirate was the long-awaited “Sun God”that Bonney, Kuma, and others had been waiting for. This revelation brought Bonney to tears of joy.
After witnessing Luffy’s use of his Gear 5 form to battle Saint Saturn, Bonney was inspired to transform herself into Nika, which aligned with the themes of her backstory that had been reinforced by Luffy’s words of encouragement. This completed her journey of self-realization.
Throughout her lifetime, Bonney tirelessly searched for Nika, the legendary figure known for freeing the oppressed. This same determination was shared by Bartholomew Kuma, who chose to place his trust in Luffy, the son of his friend Dragon. In the end, Kuma’s faith was justified as the carefree, youthful pirate proved to be the reincarnation of Joy Boy, possessing the same abilities as Nika.
Bonney now possesses the ability to tap into the same source of happiness. It was undoubtedly a fulfilling moment, one that Kuma should have been able to witness firsthand. Bonney’s desire is to fast-forward to a future where she is completely liberated, and she sees Nika as the embodiment of freedom and hope, a version of herself that she can identify with.
Despite its abilities, Bonney’s Distorted Future does have its limitations. If there is a future that she cannot envision, she will not be able to manipulate her body to match it. Additionally, at present, she is only able to maintain the transformation for a brief period of time, making her vulnerable in prolonged battles.
Despite the impressive abilities granted to her by the Age-Age Fruit, Bonney’s young age of 12 also hinders her combat effectiveness. While her Distorted Future technique shows great potential, her lack of experience and skill as a tween may prevent her from utilizing it to its full potential, particularly when facing a much stronger and more experienced opponent.
Bonney has the potential to transform into a stronger version of herself in the future, surpassing any opponent she may face. Nonetheless, until she enhances her endurance, her superiority will be temporary. Despite this, Bonney’s accomplishments are undeniably remarkable. At only 12 years old, she is considered one of the most formidable newcomers in the One Piece universe, a truly impressive feat.
