The most recent chapters of the One Piece manga have revolved around Dr. Vegapunk’s broadcast to the world. By utilizing the scientist’s speech as a storytelling tool, Eiichiro Oda, the author of One Piece, continues to explore the complex mythology of the series.
The Will of D. is a highly sought-after trait in the franchise, and its true nature remains shrouded in mystery. This unique characteristic is shared by only a select few characters who bear the initial “D.”in their names. Although its significance is still unknown, the Roger Pirates were among the few who discovered the secret of the D. during their journey to Laugh Tale.
According to the spoilers for One Piece chapter 1120, Vegapunk reveals that his former colleague Clover also possessed the “D.”in his name. This further highlights the connection between the Will of D. and the hidden history of the Void Century, as Clover was one of the scholars who perished during the World Government’s assault on Ohara.
Please be aware that this article includes significant spoilers from the One Piece manga up to chapter 1120.
The Influence of the Will of D. on Professor Clover’s Study of the One Piece World’s Greatest Mysteries
A man Thirsting for Knowledge
As a young man, Clover was fascinated by the secrets of the Void Century and dedicated his life to researching this forbidden topic. In his explorations of the world, he formed a friendship with a young Dr. Vegapunk. However, his relentless pursuit of knowledge often led to his arrest by the Navy, earning him a reputation as a notorious adventurer and archaeologist.
Ultimately, Clover made his way back to his birthplace on the island of Ohara. He was soon appointed as the head of the island’s intellectual community, known for their unwavering dedication to unraveling the mysteries of the Void Century.
Driven by their insatiable thirst for knowledge and intellectual curiosity, Clovers and the rest of the group delved into the events of this era, believed to hold the key to uncovering the true history of the One Piece world. Unfortunately, their extensive research caught the attention of the World Government.
In an effort to conceal the truth, the oppressive regime explicitly prohibited any attempts to investigate the Void Century. Clover’s actions were deemed especially perilous as he possessed the ability to decipher the Poneglyphs, the ancient stones containing the true history.
Despite the discriminatory treatment from the other citizens of Ohara, Clover, a compassionate and wise individual, showed great kindness towards Nico Robin during her childhood. He never discriminated against her and instead, supported her pursuit of studying history and becoming an archaeologist. Tragically, the World Government’s punishment towards Clover and the other scholars ultimately destroyed all of their efforts.
Despite the World Government’s declaration of a Buster Call on Ohara, the island’s destiny was sealed. Approximately 22 years prior to the current events of One Piece, the Five Elders commanded the Marines to obliterate Ohara and its people. In his final moments, Clover was able to communicate with one of the Elders using a Radio Snail before he was killed.
Despite being aware of the potential consequences, Clover was determined to reveal the truth about the kingdom that held power before the establishment of the World Government. He believed that humanity deserved to know the truth. However, before he could disclose the name of the kingdom, he was ruthlessly killed.
Exploring Clover’s Roots in One Piece Chapter 1120
The initial scanlations of One Piece chapter 1120 shocked fans with the revelation that Clover had a deeper role than just being a scholar. As Vegapunk’s message is aired, he takes a moment to reflect on his past encounter with Clover 26 years ago in the current timeline of the One Piece story.
At the entrance of the Punk Hazard laboratory, Clover pleaded with Vegapunk to assist him in researching the true history of the world, which should not be kept hidden. Despite Clover’s request, Vegapunk declined, citing his close ties to the World Government and his inability to delve into forbidden subjects like the Void Century.
In no uncertain terms, Vegapunk stated that Clover’s survival and freedom were solely due to the World Government’s monitoring of him and his companions, with the intention to dispose of them at a strategic time. In essence, Clover had managed to evade the Marines because they intentionally allowed him to do so.
Despite his composure, Vegapunk could not contain his surprise when Clover disclosed that his brother had the initial “D”in his name and was murdered solely because of it. Clover, now known as Claíomh D. Clover, then proceeded to raise his voice and address Vegapunk directly:
“How am I supposed to accept a world where you can die just for having the wrong name?!”
Despite Clover’s desperate pleas, Vegapunk remained unmoved and continued to refuse assistance. As he prepared to depart, Clover shouted after him, reminding him that he couldn’t ignore the echoes of the past forever.
Clover and the Legacy of the Will of D.
Clover’s discussion with Vegapunk highlighted his persistence in conducting his research, despite being fully aware of the potential consequences. Those who bear the initial D. possess a natural charm and confidence, and they hold steadfast to their belief in freedom, often without fear of death. Though Clover may not have been a formidable combatant, he was a resolute individual who selflessly embraced his predetermined fate.
The reputation for being the natural enemies of “gods” , i.e. the Celestial Dragons who control the World Government, is often associated with those who bear the initial “D.”in their names. This holds true for Clover as well, as he tirelessly worked to uncover and expose the shocking truth behind the World Government’s facade.
Despite the deaths of numerous One Piece characters, their unfulfilled dreams were passed down to future generations. While Clover’s untimely death put an end to his actions, his wisdom remained intact. As a result, Nico Robin was inspired to pursue her dream of becoming an archaeologist and uncovering the true history.
It is highly unlikely that the presence of both Jaguar D. Saul and Claíomh D. Clover on Ohara with Robin during the Buster Call was a mere coincidence. Clover played a significant role in nurturing Robin’s love for history, while Saul risked his life to save her, ultimately allowing her to survive. And now, years later, with the support of her comrades, Robin will continue Clover’s unfinished mission and uncover the mysteries of the Void Century.
Similarly, Clover’s dedication to uncovering the truth had a profound effect on Monkey D. Dragon. The Ohara Incident deeply disturbed and appalled him, leading him to establish the Revolutionary Army with the goal of challenging and ultimately toppling the oppressive World Government.
Despite the length of time it took, Clover’s words still had the power to move Vegapunk. Upon learning of the fate of Clover and the Ohara scholars, the brilliant scientist couldn’t help but pay homage to his dear friend.
Additionally, Vegapunk honored his friend’s request by continuing his research and sharing it with the public. This resulted in Egghead becoming a new version of Ohara, while also allowing Vegapunk to pass away with a clear conscience, knowing that he had made the honorable choice.
