The Egghead arc, which is part of the final saga of One Piece, serves as both the beginning of the saga and a crucial setup for what is to come in the manga, as it has already revealed significant plot developments.
The Egghead arc has not only uncovered the true identities of the Five Elders, who had remained enigmatic throughout the story, but also introduced JoyBoy as the original pirate of the Grand Line in the latest chapter (chapter 1114). This revelation not only raised the excitement for the saga, but also added significance to some of Oda’s previous statements.
A few years ago, Eiichiro expressed his anticipation for drawing a stereotypical pirate in the final saga of One Piece. With the recent reveal of Joyboy as the first pirate of the Grand Line in the final saga, it is possible that the series is coming to a close.

Why the Egghead Arc is a Setup for the Final Saga of One Piece
The One Piece final saga of the series began with chapter 1058, which also marked the beginning of the Egghead arc. This arc followed the Straw Hat Pirates as they traveled to Egghead Island to help Dr. Vegapunk escape from the Island, preventing the World Government from killing him.
Following Vegapunk’s research, the World Government deemed him a dangerous entity and dispatched the CP0 to eliminate the brilliant scientist, who coincidentally arrived at the same time as the Straw Hats.
With the revelation of numerous mysteries in this arc compared to the previous ones, it becomes clear that it is setting the stage for the final saga of One Piece. We learn that Bartholomew Kuma, the former warlord, is actually an ally of the Straw Hats despite being the one who separated them during the Sabaody arc. As we discover the true intentions behind every action taken by the pirate crew, it becomes evident that each one has a significant impact on the overall story.
The Five Elders, known as the rulers of the World Government, were no longer shrouded in mystery. During the Egghead Island arc, one of them, Saint Saturn, revealed his identity as the man who had coerced Kuma into becoming the Pacifista model, appearing alongside Admiral Kizaru.
Despite the death of Vegapunk at the hands of Admiral Kizaru, the scientists were not deterred. They made a bold move and began to expose the truth of the world to those in the Grand Line. This left Saint Saturn feeling perplexed and determined to find a way to put a stop to the scientists before it was too late.
Additionally, a major revelation during this arc occurred when Saturn, feeling powerless, gathered all of the Gorosei on Egghead Island. The Five Elders then manifested in their yokai forms, causing chaos and demolishing any potential leads to Vegapunk’s research.
With the immense quantity and magnitude of revelations in a single arc, the Egghead arc set the stage for the final saga of One Piece. However, the culmination came in chapter 1114 when Vegapunk disclosed the existence of JoyBoy, the world’s first pirate who lived during the Void Century. Furthermore, it is possible that JoyBoy is the character that Oda has eagerly been waiting to illustrate.
The Introduction of JoyBoy and the Final Phase of the Final Saga
In June 2007, Eiichiro Oda announced that a character with an eyepatch would be introduced in the final phase of his series. He expressed his excitement to draw this character.
The revelation of JoyBoy’s presence during a crucial point in the One Piece final saga suggests that the eyepatched pirate mentioned by Oda 14 years ago may indeed be JoyBoy. Based on Oda’s statement, the upcoming chapters may bring an end to the Egghead arc and mark the beginning of the final stage in the One Piece saga.
