One Piece Finds New Streaming Home in the UK

British viewers will now be able to watch One Piece on an unexpected platform, as Luffy and the Straw Hats find a new home.

Despite being in its 25th year, One Piece’s popularity continues to increase. As the manga enters the Elbaf Arc, Eiichiro Oda’s pirate saga remains one of the top anime, rivaling other successful franchises like Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer.

In an unexpected turn of events, it has been revealed that One Piece will be airing on the BBC. Starting in 2024, the majority of the anime’s episodes will be available on the iPlayer for viewers located within the British Isles.

The British Broadcasting Corporation, also known as BBC, is the main national broadcaster for those living outside the UK. BBC offers a personalized streaming service called the iPlayer and is responsible for financing a vast array of television programs such as Doctor Who and Peaky Blinders. Additionally, BBC also acquires licenses for other content to cater to British viewers.

On August 30, 2024, it was announced that One Piece would be added to the BBC’s current collection, which already includes Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Quest: The Adventures of Dai, and Pokémon. While the number of options may not be extensive, this addition certainly adds some excitement to the selection.

According to Fiona Campbell, Controller of Youth Audiences, iPlayer and BBC Three, One Piece has risen to become a cultural sensation thanks to its captivating storytelling, well-developed characters, and worldwide following. She expressed her enthusiasm for the fans’ reception of the extensive collection of English dubbed episodes, exclusively available on iPlayer.

One Piece will begin streaming on the BBC iPlayer starting from September 1, 2024 and will continue to release over 1,000 episodes until November. While the agreement currently only includes up to the Land of Wano Arc, there is still a substantial amount of content to enjoy.
