One Piece: Is Koby Joining the Straw Hats Because He Can’t Keep Up with Luffy and the Marines?

The final saga of One Piece has been unfolding since the beginning of the Egghead arc, and it will ultimately result in the fate of all organizations and groups by the conclusion of this phase, as is tradition for the final part of any series.

The Marine Corporation, led by Fleet Admiral Akainu, is one organization in the series. While they may not be able to stand against other powerful groups like the Cross Guild or infamous pirate crews on their own, there is one individual in their ranks who has the ability to change the course of events, as seen during the Paramount arc.

The Marine captain, Koby, is often overshadowed by the presence of powerful fighters such as the Admirals and Vice-admirals within the organization. As a result, he has little opportunity to showcase his abilities. However, if he were to join forces with the Straw Hat Pirates, he could potentially challenge the Marines’ beliefs and bring about a new perspective on justice.

This article includes the author’s opinion and may contain spoilers from the One Piece manga series.

One of the initial characters introduced in the series is Captain Koby, who served as the caretaker of Alvida’s pirate ship. Despite his desire to become a Marine officer, he was compelled to participate in pirate activities under Alvida’s command. However, his luck changed when he met Luffy, who helped him see that his dream was achievable.

Following Luffy’s victory over Alvida, Koby was inspired to chase his dream of joining the ranks of the Marines. He was taken on as an apprentice by Vice Admiral Garp, who recognized Koby’s potential for greatness.

Despite not being one of the top Marines, Koby was a valuable member of the organization, having begun his journey as a Chief Petty Officer trained by Monkey D Garp.

During the Paramount War arc, Koby’s abilities reached their peak as he took it upon himself to prevent the ongoing battle between the Marines and Pirates. While the Red Hair Pirates ultimately ended the war, Koby’s involvement was crucial in revealing the potential consequences of the ongoing violence. This moment also sparked speculation among fans that Koby had unlocked the ability of Future Sight.

Throughout the time skip, Koby rose through the ranks of the Marines and gained significant influence, earning the title of Marine Captain and being hailed as a ‘Hero’ for his bravery during the Rocky-Port Incident. Additionally, it was revealed during the Wano arc that Koby had joined SWORD, an organization that operated with different principles than the Marines.

Despite his rank as a Marine Captain, Koby was abducted and was unable to defend himself against Blackbeard. Garp arrived to rescue him, but ended up sacrificing himself. Luckily, Koby was able to flee with the assistance of SWORD members. Since then, Koby has not been seen and remains missing.

Despite the mystery surrounding his decision to join SWORD, many fans theorize that he did so in order to further enhance his strength and gain a deeper understanding of the world. Unfortunately, within the Marine, everyone is indoctrinated with the belief of ‘Absolute Justice.’

Despite SWORD facing difficulties, Koby has no other option but to turn to the Straw Hat Pirates for help in becoming stronger. Since the timeskip, Koby and Monkey D Luffy have not encountered each other, making their reunion highly anticipated by fans. Koby will continue to serve in the Marine, similar to his role as a Captain within SWORD.

The One Piece manga is currently streaming Vegapunk’s message throughout the Grand Line, which could potentially lead to the brilliant scientist uncovering the true identity of Imu and the World Government.

This turn of events would lead to Akainu breaking away from the World Government, leaving the Marines as the sole force battling against evil. With Koby’s growth as a result of training with the Straw Hat Pirates, he would have a smooth ascent through the ranks.
