One Piece Live Action wins official Writers Guild of America award

On the specified date of Sunday, April 14, 2024, the Writers Guild of America officially awarded Netflix’s One Piece Live Action series with a victory at the Writers Guild Awards. The series specifically triumphed in the category of “Children’s Episodic, Long Form and Specials,”with writers Matt Owens and Steven Maeda earning recognition for their work on the “Romance Dawn”episode.

Despite only being nominated in one category for the Writers Guild Awards, the One Piece Live Action series’ victory is still incredibly thrilling and noteworthy. This achievement adds to the series’ numerous award nominations and wins, further solidifying its critical success since its debut in August 2023.

The One Piece Live Action series on Netflix is a live-action version of Eiichiro Oda’s manga series of the same name. It was quickly renewed for a second season, just two weeks after its initial release on the platform, making it one of the fastest renewals in Netflix’s history.

Former One Piece Live Action showrunner Steven Maeda receives award for pilot episode

As previously stated, Netflix’s One Piece Live Action series has not been the only recipient of awards at the 2023 Writers Guild Awards. The show has also been recognized at the 2024 Kidscreen Awards, winning the Best Design award in the Creative Talent category and the Best in Class Award in the Tweens/Teen Programming category.

Despite being nominated for both the Best New Series award in the Tweens/Teens Programming category and Best Hair Styling in the Children and Teen Television Programming Category for the 11th annual MUAHS awards from the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, the series did not emerge victorious in either category.

This news of Owens and Maeda’s most recent joint award win for the series coincides with reports that Maeda has departed from the production of its second season. This was seemingly confirmed by a recent post on the official Writers Guild of America website, where Joe Tracz has taken over Maeda’s responsibilities as showrunner and executive producer.

It appears that the second season of the series is set to begin filming at Tomorrow Studios in South Africa in June 2024, based on recent comments and posts from the central cast. This aligns with the news that the show has been renewed for a second season and that the filming is scheduled to start in June 2024.

The anticipated start of the second season of the series will begin with the Loguetown arc and continue through at least the halfway point of the Alabasta arc. There is speculation among fans that the second season will cover the entire Alabasta arc, but this ultimately relies on the amount of material that is omitted. At the very least, the second season is expected to reach the halfway mark of the Alabasta arc by its conclusion.
