One Piece manga confirmed Shanks’ ulterior motive, but no one noticed

Shanks is a highly enigmatic character in One Piece. While the manga revealed his hidden intentions some time ago, they were not fully understood due to translation issues.

Despite the revelations in the Egghead Arc, the enigmatic layers of One Piece continue to perplex us, leaving much still to be uncovered. This is particularly evident with Shanks, a pivotal figure in the story.

Shanks was first introduced in the East Blue Saga, but his appearances in the story are infrequent. However, whenever he does make an appearance, it is always a significant moment. As seen in Chapter 1054, even the legendary One Piece treasure, desired by the entire world, is something that Shanks covets.

Upon seeing Luffy’s updated wanted poster, Shanks immediately informs Beck that it’s the perfect moment to seize the One Piece. However, a crucial aspect of this encounter was not accurately conveyed during translation.

As stated by a Japanese native speaker on Twitter/X, the kanji used in that scene means “take by force”(奪う), implying that Shanks intends to take One Piece from its rightful owner. It is probable that he is aware of who the true possessor of One Piece is, which explains his choice of wording.

The chapter suggests that Shanks had been patiently waiting for Luffy to awaken his devil fruit before taking any action. In addition, he had a meeting with the Gorosei and discussed a particular pirate, which is particularly unusual given that he had previously stolen Luffy’s devil fruit from them.

Despite the fact that Shanks, a powerful Yonko, appearing in a small village in East Blue was already unusual, Luffy’s accidental consumption of the devil fruit ultimately resulted in him gaining the same abilities as Joyboy. Whether this was a deliberate plan or simply a coincidence, it was destined to happen.

In Oden’s flashback, Roger reveals something to Shanks that has yet to be disclosed. Shanks’ character reinforces the fact that his intentions have always been complex since the beginning. It remains uncertain whether his determination to acquire the treasure through force stems from selfishness. Despite being a pirate, Shanks has never displayed outright malevolence. However, his occupation does not absolve him of wrongdoing.
