Right before author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga series took a break, fans were treated to one of the most crucial chapters in the entire story. The appearance of the Mother Flame weapon was a major revelation, causing the theorycrafting community of the series to go into a frenzy as they attempt to decipher its meaning.
Similarly, a fascinating theory within the One Piece fandom suggests that the Mother Flame may be the nemesis of the “Mother Sea.”This concept is supported by the way the supposed weapon was introduced and the notion that this never-ending flame could pose a threat to Devil Fruit users, the Gorosei, and other powerful figures.
One Piece’s Mother Flame weapon seemingly introduced as the perfect counter to the Gorosei
The initial concept of the Mother Flame was first hinted at through the initial One Piece panels, which depicted its ability to burn even in water. This, coupled with its previous use in creating a hole in the sea, indicates that the Mother Flame is a powerful weapon against the sea.
It is noteworthy to mention that Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, a member of the Gorosei, was affected by the light of the Mother Flame when he uncovered it. This is similar to how Devil Fruits, which were established by Shanks early on in the series to be the “Sea Devil’s incarnations,”can also cause harm to those who possess them. It is plausible that Saturn could potentially be a Sea Devil himself, or possess powers derived from Devil Fruits and the Sea Devils, which would explain his reaction to the light of the Mother Flame.
This is also consistent with the widely accepted One Piece theory that Imu is intended to symbolize an Umibozu, a mythical creature from Japanese folklore also known as a Sea Devil. This theory gains more credibility as all of the Gorosei’s transformed forms possess black clouds, while Luffy’s Gear 5 form is accompanied by a white cloud.
In a similar fashion, the one-shot Romance Dawn (which serves as the basis for the One Piece storyline) refers to Luffy’s Devil Fruit as a Dream Fruit. This concept may have influenced the main series, explaining why Luffy’s cloud is depicted as white while those of other Awakened Zoan-type users are shown as black.
Similarly, Luffy’s Fruit may be a Dream Fruit, acting as a nemesis to the “Mother Sea,”while the Gorosei possess genuine Devil Fruits and are adversaries of the Mother Flame. In essence, the Gorosei’s Devil Fruits, derived from the Sea Devil Imu, align them with the “Mother Sea,”making the Mother Flame their opposition.
This indicates that Luffy’s Dream Fruit makes him a foe of the Mother Sea, aligning with the concept of “Devil Fruits”rendering their wielders unable to swim in seawater. Similarly, Seastone’s ability to nullify these powers aligns with the Mother Flame, which mimics the power of the sun in a smaller form.
Despite Luffy’s reincarnation as the Sun God Nika, he is still unable to harm the Gorosei despite his strongest attempts. It is highly probable that he will resort to using his flames, tapping into the true power of the sun, aligning with the aforementioned theories. This is based on the belief that the Gorosei’s abilities are derived from the “true”Devil Fruits, while Luffy’s “Devil”Fruit is actually a Dream Fruit.
It could be interpreted from One Piece that Luffy has yet to reach his full potential as the Sun God, suggesting that he has not fully matured. In relation to a real-life star’s life cycle, he has not yet entered the Red Giant phase. When he reaches this level as the Sun God Nika, Luffy will possess the ability to harm the Gorosei. This will be accomplished by harnessing the power of the sun, similar to the Mother Flame which has been hinted to have a detrimental effect on the Gorosei.
