Eiichiro Oda, the mastermind behind One Piece, has recently uncovered intriguing details about the backgrounds of Admirals Ryokugyu and Fujitora. Here’s a summary of what has been revealed.
The events following the Summit War at Marineford ushered in significant transformations within the One Piece universe. Fleet Admiral Sengoku decided to step down, with hopes that Kuzan would succeed him. However, Akainu strongly opposed this transition.
A fierce battle ensued between Akainu and Kuzan that lasted for ten days, culminating in Akainu’s victory and his ascension to Fleet Admiral. Kuzan, on the contrary, chose to depart and allied himself with the Blackbeard Pirates. After the two-year time skip, the story introduced two new Admirals to take their places.
The One Piece manga is well-known for its SBS (Shitsumon o Bosh Suru), which roughly translates to “I’m Taking Questions.”This special section features Eiichiro Oda responding to fan inquiries about a wide range of topics, though many focus on the puzzling aspects of the One Piece narrative.
Volume 110 of One Piece is scheduled for release on November 1, 2024, and it will include a new Q&A section. Translations of the questions and answers have been shared by a prominent One Piece fan account on Twitter/X, revealing insights on the backstories of Admirals Aramaki and Fujitora.

The question posed was, “Odacchi! Garchu! Please share with us the previous jobs of Fujitora and Ryokugyu! (Before they became Marine Admirals.)”
Oda’s response featured some revelations: “Certainly! Both of these individuals caused a change in their previous roles before becoming defenders of the nations aligned with the World Government, through the ‘World Military Draft’ system, as they were specifically chosen by the Marines.
“Ryokugyu: Aramaki originates from the South Blue. He served as a police officer in the Taya Kingdom but became embroiled in a serious incident involving a woman, resulting in his imprisonment.
“His remarkable strength eventually drew the attention of the government. He was drafted into the Marines and swiftly promoted to Admiral status.
“Fujitora: Issho is from the West Blue. He faced heavy financial losses at a gambling establishment on Twin Snake Island, where he was employed as a bodyguard, which the World Government acquired for a substantial amount.
“Issho previously held the title of Defense Military Chief in the now-defunct Aoi (Blue) Kingdom, located in the Grand Line. Following the war that obliterated his kingdom, he was deemed a major war criminal, a fact that the World Government would eventually uncover.”
While Ryokugyu’s past is shrouded in mystery, Fujitora stands out as a more layered character. During the Dressrosa Arc, he disclosed that he had blinded himself to avoid witnessing certain horrors.
This introspection may tie back to the conflict that resulted in the downfall of the Aoi Kingdom. Unlike many Admirals, Fujitora refuses to blindly obey commands; instead, he pursues his own objectives, actively combating the corruption and injustices perpetrated by the World Government.
The One Piece manga has now concluded the Egghead Incident Arc, setting the stage for the unfolding events in the Land of the Gods Arc.
