Despite the scheduled release date of August 19, 2024, spoilers for One Piece chapter 1123 have already been leaked. The chapter depicts the aftermath of the chaotic events at Egghead Island, with the Straw Hats and Giants successfully evading the Five Elders. In addition, a flashback reveals that Vegapunk had already uncovered the presence of a traitor before the current circumstances.

The flashback revealed that many suspected Vegapunk Lilith to be the traitor due to her embodiment of evil. However, it was actually Vegapunk York, who embodied greed, who turned out to be the traitor. This could provide an explanation for why the scientist did not label anyone as “evil”during his speech and also shed light on the reasons behind the Void Century War.

One Piece: Why Vegapunk’s reveal as a traitor indicates the true reason behind the Void Century War

Despite the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates rejoicing over their successful escape from Egghead Island, Sanji remained isolated on the Going Merry. Lost in thought, he gazed at the lifeless body of Vegapunk and relived a flashback from two weeks prior. During this flashback, Vegapunk Shaka had uncovered a discrepancy in the data regarding The Mother Flame, hinting at the possibility of a traitor within their ranks.

Despite Vegapunk Stella and Shaka’s suspicions that Lilith, who represents evil among the Vegapunks, may be the traitor, it was ultimately revealed by Vegapunk Pythagoras that York was the one responsible for tampering with the data of the Mother Flame. It was later discovered that York had also given a portion of the Mother Flame to the Five Elders.

In the 1111th episode of One Piece, it was revealed that Vegapunk York had betrayed Egghead Island by attempting to become a Celestial Dragon. In exchange for fulfilling her dream, she had assisted the Five Elders, embodying the Vegapunks’ characteristic of greed.

Following this surprising revelation, let us go back to Vegapunk’s stream and observe how his speech remained impartial, merely presenting the facts he knew about the Void Century. The researcher also urged his audience not to label one side as inherently evil, as he himself was uncertain of what deems someone as ‘evil.’

The revelation in chapter 1123 suggests that Vegapunk’s intentions were not to harm the innocent, but rather to protect against the greedy. This brings us back to the Void Century War between the First Twenty Families and Joy Boy, the first pirate.

Before the war, it was widely believed that the First Twenty family’s motivation for starting it was to prevent Joy Boy from spreading the message of freedom to the people. However, the recent revelation suggests that the true reason for the Void Century War may have been the First Twenty Family’s desire to possess the Ancient Kingdom for their own gain.

The Ancient Kingdom’s technological advancements, as stated by Vegapunk in the past, were renowned for surpassing the capabilities of modern-day technology. One of the most notable examples is the existence of Emeth, a machine that could potentially be used for world domination. This could possibly explain why the First Twenty Families declared war against Joy Boy.
