As Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine prepares for its Obon holiday publication break, One Piece released what is believed to be one of the last chapters of the Egghead arc. This is largely due to the fact that the most recent installment of the series shows protagonist Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat crew leaving Egghead Island’s waters.
This is reinforced by the events in One Piece chapter 1122, where Emeth (with help from Joy Boy) defeated the Gorosei and Luffy and his companions escaped the island. Before these events occurred, Emeth and Luffy briefly conversed and Emeth inquired about Luffy’s name.
After learning Luffy’s full name, Emeth reflected on the significance of his D. initial and even repeated it to himself before ultimately unleashing Joy Boy’s Conqueror’s Haki on the Gorosei. Though Emeth’s fate in One Piece chapter 1122 prevented any further elaboration, this reaction suggests that Joy Boy, like Luffy, may also have been a member of the D. Clan.
One Piece’s D. Clan and the Possible Inclusion of Joy Boy
From One Piece chapter 1122, it can be deduced that Emeth pondered specifically on the D. initial, which serves as the most compelling evidence for this conclusion. This implies that the initial holds significance and familiarity for Emeth, similar to how one would casually mention something familiar and meaningful in conversation.
The act of Emeth choosing to use Joy Boy’s Conqueror’s Haki provides additional evidence for this belief. The context surrounding this event in the issue’s conclusion further reinforces this idea. It can be interpreted that Joy Boy bestowed this Haki upon Emeth as a way to ensure his protection, even after Joy Boy’s death. Emeth’s reaction to receiving this gift from his friend highlights the significance he places on it, as it serves as a constant reminder of their bond.
Similarly, Emeth would not have used it so casually to defend Luffy unless he had recognized a significant link between them and Joy Boy. This is reinforced by Emeth’s portrayal in the Egghead arc, where he consistently confuses Luffy with Joy Boy. In One Piece chapter 1122, Emeth’s words further reinforce this as he expresses gratitude towards Luffy for allowing him to hear the familiar tune of the Drums of Liberation once again.
As Emeth contemplated the meaning of the D. initial, it became clear that he saw a significant link between the two individuals. This realization solidified his decision to protect Luffy above all else. Moments later, Emeth unleashed Joy Boy’s Conqueror’s Haki, which can be assumed to be a result of his musings on the D. initial being present in Luffy’s name. This further supports the connection that Emeth had drawn between the two.
Although it is merely conjecture, the combination of these events and revelations provides compelling evidence for this particular interpretation. Further support for this theory can be found in the connections made between Luffy and Joy Boy, such as Zunesha referring to Luffy as Joy Boy at the conclusion of the Wano arc and Egghead’s suggestion through Dr. Vegapunk’s message that Joy Boy possessed the same Devil Fruit as Luffy.
Keeping all of this in consideration, it is logical that Eiichiro Oda, the author and illustrator of the series, would also aim to establish a link between the two characters in terms of their membership in the D. Clan. Although it has not been confirmed at the time of writing this article, fans can expect this connection to be officially revealed as the series continues into its final saga.
