One Piece’s next Straw Hat crewmate may subvert all expectations in the best way possible

The exact number of crew members that the central Straw Hat Pirates will end up with in author and illustrator Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga series is a heavily debated topic. Some fans believe that protagonist Monkey D. Luffy gave a clear answer to this question during the series’ early stages, stating that he wanted at least ten crewmates in addition to himself.

Currently, Luffy’s dream of having a complete crew is almost fulfilled, with Nami, Usopp, Roronoa Zoro, Vinsmoke Sanji, Tony Tony Chopper, Nico Robin, Franky, Brook, and Jinbe making up nine of his desired ten members. Some fans also speculate that there may be additional “spiritual”members, such as Yamato or Nefertari D. Vivi, based on their past experiences and connections with the Straw Hat Pirates.

Despite this, there has been a longstanding fan theory suggesting that the Straw Hat Pirates will eventually have a true tenth crew member, and many believe that this mystery member has already been revealed to fans.

Jewelry Bonney and Bartholomew Kuma: The Next Members of the Straw Hat Pirates?

The source of the speculation that Kuma will become the tenth and potentially last member of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece is rooted in a fan theory that dates back almost 14 years. This theory was initially brought up in volume 59’s SBS section by a person using the alias “SHANKUS.LOVE”who pointed out the numerical pattern mentioned above.

Essentially, each of the Devil Fruits within the Straw Hat pirates has a Japanese name that combines two numbers from one to ten. For example, Luffy’s “Gomu Gomu”is a combination of five and six, while Chopper’s “Hito Hito”represents one and ten. Robin’s “Hana Hana”combines eight and seven, and Brook’s “Yomi Yomi”represents four and three.

Similarly, it can be inferred that Bartholomew Kuma and his Nikyu Nikyu no Mi will be the last character to join the Straw Hat Pirates, completing the missing numbers of two and nine. This theory was initially plausible when the SBS was first released, as Kuma was still considered to be alive at that time.

Despite prior beliefs, the theory about the Egghead arc has been disrupted due to the emergence of Kuma and his subsequent shutdown after his limited involvement in the arc. While the extent of his condition is uncertain, it is widely speculated that Kuma will remain non-functional for the remainder of the Egghead arc and potentially the entire series. However, there is still a glimmer of hope as the Straw Hats plan to rescue the Vegapunk Satellites, which could potentially lead to Kuma’s repair.

Despite previous developments in the Egghead arc, a new revelation emerged that contradicted this theory. It was revealed that Kuma’s daughter, Jewelry Bonney, had complete control over him and the Pacifista. This meant that Bonney could easily command Kuma to go with her instead of joining Luffy’s crew, negating the belief that Kuma would choose to join the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece.

Despite this, Bonney is already heavily indebted to the Straw Hats and her debt will only increase if they successfully rescue her from Egghead Island. While technically, all that is required for her to join the crew and complete the aforementioned numbering system is Kuma’s Devil Fruit, the Toshi Toshi no Mi, or the Age-Age Fruit, which Bonney already possesses, prevents her from inheriting Kuma’s Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, or the Paw-Paw Fruit.

Although there is a possibility that another crewmate may inherit Kuma’s Devil Fruit upon his death, there is a simpler explanation. It is likely that Bonney will join the Straw Hats once Kuma is fully repaired, as they both owe a debt to the crew for saving them. This would also mean that the Straw Hats will essentially gain Kuma as a new crew member, with Bonney and Kuma being the 10th and 11th members, respectively.

Despite this, there is still a considerable amount of time before this One Piece theory can become a reality in the mainline series. The Straw Hats must first manage to escape with at least one Vegapunk Satellite intact in order to fix Kuma. Additionally, it is crucial that they maintain a positive relationship with Bonney in order to convince her to join their crew. With luck, fans will witness the fulfillment of these requirements as the Egghead arc reaches its climax and comes to a close.
