OpenAI CEO Jokes About Studio Ghibli AI Content “Slop”

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Adams, has humorously addressed the recent trend of ChatGPT users generating Studio Ghibli-inspired imagery of him resembling a “twink.”This phenomenon emerged following the launch of a new image generation feature within ChatGPT, which has captured the imagination of users who enjoy crafting whimsical, animated-style pictures.

Embracing the Trend: Sam Adams’ Response

This creative endeavor is likely to raise eyebrows at Studio Ghibli, particularly from its legendary director, Hayao Miyazaki. In a pointed critique of AI in animation dating back to 2016, Miyazaki expressed his disdain: “I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.” Despite this, Adams finds humor in the AI-generated artworks, stating, “one man’s slop is another man’s treasure.”

Amidst the backlash against AI-generated art, Adams is reveling in the lighthearted reception of his Ghibli-style transformation. He shared a playful post on social media, reflecting on his journey in tech innovation:

be me grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever mostly no one cares for first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything wake up one day to hundreds of messages: ‘look I made you into a twink Ghibli style’ haha

In addition to his amusing commentary, Adams updated his profile picture on Twitter/X to feature one of the newly created Studio Ghibli portraits, further embracing the trend.

Technical Challenges Ahead

Despite the excitement surrounding the new feature, Adams acknowledged the technical challenges ChatGPT is currently facing. He reported that the performance of their graphics processing units (GPUs) has been under strain due to the high demand for image generations.

“It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT, ” Adams mentioned.“But our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rare limits while we work on improving efficiency. Hopefully, this won’t take too long.”

He also noted that some image requests, despite being legitimate, are currently being rejected as the team works to resolve these issues swiftly.
