OpenAI has announced the release of its rival to Google Search, called SearchGPT. This advanced search engine utilizes GPT-4, an AI technology.
Rumors of OpenAI launching its own search engine have been circulating on social media for months, and the AI company has officially announced the release of their new product.
On July 25, 2024, Sam Altman announced the news on Twitter/X and it was also accompanied by a blog post from OpenAI available on their website.
“We believe there is significant potential for improvement in the current state of search. As a result, we are introducing a new prototype called SearchGPT,”he announced.
“We will use the prototype as a learning tool to improve it, and then incorporate the technology into ChatGPT to ensure real-time functionality and optimal usefulness.”

Despite still being in testing, SearchGPT will initially only be accessible to 10,000 users according to OpenAI. Although the specific language model being utilized is not mentioned in the blog post, The Verge reports that it is powered by GPT-4.
Many users responded to Altman’s tweet, expressing their excitement at the prospect of being one of the initial 10,000 users.

“One person expressed their enthusiasm, stating, ‘I am excited to witness how this will contribute to the advancement of AI.’”
A third person commented, “I have signed up for the waitlist. Thank you for helping to advance progress! I am excited, even thrilled!”
Despite this, many others expressed their hesitation in getting too excited about the new product. They are still eagerly anticipating the release of OpenAI’s voice capabilities in ChatGPT.
In addition, Altman revealed that the voice alpha rollout will commence for plus subscribers by the end of July.
During its spring event, OpenAI announced ChatGPT’s voice capabilities. However, the release was postponed following allegations of copying Scarlett Johansson’s voice. OpenAI has since refuted these claims and clarified that any similarities between the two voices were unintentional.
