How to Farm Heavy Oil Residue in Satisfactory
You cannot manually create this item; instead, you must refine it in a Refinery using Crude Oil. To do this, you’ll need to unlock the construction of Oil Extractors and Refineries by completing the Oil Processing milestone in Tier 5. This milestone also allows you to locate Crude Oil with your Scanner.
As illustrated in the map above, Pure Crude Oil is scarce, so I recommend establishing your base in the Rocky Desert starting location. This area is conveniently located near two Pure Crude Oil nodes along the western shore of the map.
Your Heavy Oil Residue factory setup should have the following buildings:
- x1 Oil Extractor over Pure Crude Oil
- x1 Refinery for Rubber and Heavy Oil Residue
- x1 Refinery for Plastic and Heavy Oil Residue
- x2 Storage Containers separate for Rubber and Plastic
- x2 Industrial Fluid Buffers for storing Heavy Oil Residue
- x1 Refinery for producing Petroleum Coke
- x1 Refinery for generating Fuel
This setup provides an effective means of farming Heavy Oil Residue, but numerous variations can be made to the configuration to produce different items.
For example, while producing Rubber and Plastic with Heavy Oil Residue as a side product, you could also refine Oil into Heavy Oil Resin and Polymer Resin using a third Refinery. Note that this can only be achieved using an Alternate Recipe, but it’s an excellent method to produce Polymer Resin, which is necessary for crafting Fabric.
As you store your primary products—Rubber and Plastic—you can utilize Heavy Oil Residue in two large Industrial Fluid Buffers for storage. However, to maximize the value of this item, it’s advisable to convert it into other useful products.
In my setup, I utilized Heavy Oil Residue to produce Petroleum Coke and Fuel with two different Refineries. Additionally, there’s the option to create Turbofuel using Heavy Oil Residue and Compacted Coal through an Assembler, combining Coal and Sulfur.
