Optimal PC Settings for High FPS in Final Fantasy 16

Final Fantasy 16 has finally launched on PC, but players are expressing dissatisfaction with its performance optimization. During our performance testing, we encountered multiple FPS drops in specific locations, stuttering issues, and consistently low FPS overall. However, we’ve identified the optimal settings for Final Fantasy 16 that can enhance the game’s performance on your PC.

  • Graphics Card: Choose your primary GPU
  • Display: Select your main display monitor
  • Screen Mode: Fullscreen
  • Screen Resolution: Your PC’s Native Resolution
  • Refresh Rate: Set to the highest refresh rate your display supports
  • HDR: On (The game looks incredible with HDR enabled)
  • VSync: Off (Avoids input lag)

These display settings are critical for optimizing how Final Fantasy 16 runs on your PC. Now, let’s move on to the graphics settings that most significantly affect game performance.

  • Graphics Preset: Custom
  • Screen Brightness: Adjust to personal preference
  • Super Resolution: AMD FSR 3 (recommended for all Nvidia or AMD GPUs except RTX 40 series) or Nvidia DLSS 3 (only for RTX 40 series GPUs)
  • Dynamic Resolution: Off
  • Upscaling: Quality (consider dropping to Balance mode if desired FPS is not achieved)
  • Sharpness: Recommended at 5 or higher
  • Frame Generation: On (Available for non-RTX 40 series users if FSR 3 is selected. Highly recommended, as its implementation in Final Fantasy 16 is impressive)
  • Motion Blur: Off
  • Vignette: Off
  • Chromatic Aberration: Off
  • Nvidia Reflex Low Latency: Enable + Boost
  • Graphical Fidelity: Medium
  • Texture Quality: High (if VRAM is under 8GB, consider Medium)
  • Terrain Detail: Medium (High setting may cause FPS drops in densely vegetated areas)
  • Shadow Quality: Medium
  • Water Quality: Medium
  • Clutter Density: High
  • NPC Quantity: Medium
  • Screen Space Reflections: Off (This setting is demanding on performance, but can be enabled if the visual detail is worth it for you)
  • Ambient Occlusion: On (Enhances environmental depth with minimal performance impact)
  • Bloom Shader: Off (An aesthetic feature that incurs a minor performance cost if enabled)
  • Variable Rate Shading: On (In our testing, no performance impact was observed with VRS enabled, nor did we note any visual changes)

These settings represent the best graphics configuration for the Final Fantasy 16 PC port. Upon initial release, the game’s performance was lacking with FPS dropping to the 20s during the opening Eikon fight. However, using the optimized settings above, I’ve maintained 75 FPS on my laptop equipped with an i7-11800H CPU, Nvidia RTX 3070 GPU, and 32GB RAM.

Current Performance of Final Fantasy 16 on PC

The Frame Generation feature significantly boosts performance in Final Fantasy 16. Unlike in other games where FSR 3’s frame generation causes stutters and latency issues, this is not the case for FFXVI. The Frame Generation works seamlessly, providing a notable increase of +20-25 FPS consistently.

Nonetheless, there is a considerable FPS drop in the Cid’s Hideaway area, where performance may dip to the 25-30 FPS range even with the above optimizations. To restore FPS to normal, you must progress the story by interacting with Cid at least once. Hopefully, the developers will continue to optimize the PC port for a smoother gaming experience for all.
