Original Demon Slayer designs prove Tanjiro missed out on being the coolest new-gen shonen MC

Despite being a typical shonen manga series, Demon Slayer went through several modifications before being published by a company. As a result, the end result that has captured the hearts of fans is significantly different from the original vision of its creator, Koyoharu Gotouge.

The publication company’s editors frequently collaborate with writers, offering guidance and requesting minor adjustments to the story or characters. In the present scenario, the manga artist had a notably distinct approach to developing Tanjiro’s character in the original version.

The internet has been circulating images of the first iteration, leading fans to believe that Tanjiro may have missed the opportunity to become one of the most impressive protagonists in today’s modern shonen anime.

As observed in the Reddit post, the previous iteration of Tanjiro appeared to be more aggressive and distant compared to the Tanjiro we are familiar with. However, the current version displays a more polite, cheerful, and passionate demeanor, with a strong sense of empathy. He even shows empathy towards demons before defeating them. While fans admire this version of the series for various reasons, the earlier versions seem to have a more thrilling appeal.

The original version of the character also lacks both legs and an arm, leading one to speculate that Kibutsuji Muzan is responsible for their loss. According to theories, Tanjiro in the original version is driven by intense animosity and a desire for revenge. It is difficult to imagine the protagonist with such a personality, as the final version presents a vastly different demeanor.

Considering the show’s setting, it makes sense to have a ruthless killer as the main character. Demon Slayer takes place in a world where death is a constant threat and people live under the oppressive rule of demons. As a result, the tone and atmosphere are expected to be dark and grim.

Additionally, ruthless and cold characters appear to be well-received by audiences, with their perceived coolness and strong on-screen presence.

Tanjiro’s rugged appearance, marked by the scars across his face, is a defining trait that is also seen in Sanemi Shinazugawa. This perfectly complements his personality, as he is one of the few characters in the series who is able to maintain control over his emotions even in the most intense situations. Unfortunately, this aspect also contributes to Tanjiro being overlooked as one of the coolest shonen protagonists.
