Oscar De La Hoya slammed for “classless” reaction to Rolly Romero loss

Despite his reputation as a successful boxing promoter, Oscar De La Hoya has received criticism for his unsportsmanlike reaction to Rolly Romero’s defeat on Saturday.

Romero was defeated by Isaac Cruz, who ended the WBA super-lightweight world title reign of the former in the eighth round of their match in Las Vegas.

Earlier this year, there was discussion about a potential world title shot against Romero for super-lightweight contender Ryan Garcia, who is promoted by De La Hoya.

Despite being promoted by Mayweather promotions, Romero ultimately chose to participate in Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions latest show rather than engage in the proposed fight. As a result, his title defense was against Cruz on the promotion’s inaugural show on Amazon Prime Video.

Following Romero’s defeat on Saturday, De La Hoya, along with fellow Golden Boy Promotions promoter Bernard Hopkins, were caught on Instagram laughing at his expense. The accompanying message read: “We just found out Rolly was defeated by a chihuahua LMAO.”

Therefore, Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather promotions, criticized the duo and labeled their response as “classless.”

“Although Rolly seems to be doing fine, Ellerbe expressed concern about what could have happened if the situation had turned tragic.”

“In my opinion, the behavior of two Hall of Fame fighters and promoters was unacceptable, especially right after a fight. However, I would like to give credit to Isaac Cruz and his team for their impressive performance.”

Cruz may consider challenging the victor of the highly anticipated Garcia vs. WBC champion Devin Haney bout next month, in addition to potential unification fights against IBF champion Subriel Matias and WBO champion Teofimo Lopez.
