Overlord Season 5 has been officially green-lit for production, as confirmed in a recent tweet from the well-known anime and manga news leaker, @SugoiLite, on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Saturday, September 21, 2024. However, an official announcement from the production team is still pending.
Given that this leaker has a reliable track record of announcing anime and manga news ahead of official confirmations, fans are justified in their excitement regarding the production of Overlord Season 5. Further information about this upcoming season will be disclosed once the anime’s official team decides to share it.
The production for Overlord Season 5 has reportedly been confirmed
On September 21, 2024, @SugoiLite shared a tweet to notify fans about the confirmed production of Overlord Season 5. However, the leaker did not provide any specific details regarding aspects such as the production studio, anticipated release date, or information about the cast and crew.
Fans must await official confirmation from the production team. Notably, the credibility of this news is underscored by the leaker’s impressive history of accurate predictions, which includes the production announcements for the Ranma 1/2 remake, Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint anime, and Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 4. This gives fans hope for Overlord Season 5.
In addition, the Overlord franchise recently premiered the third movie, Overlord the Movie: The Sacred Kingdom Arc, in Japanese theaters on September 20, 2024. The film adapts volumes 12 and 13 from Kugane Maruyama’s acclaimed light novel series, focusing on the Sacred Kingdom Arc.
Prior to this film, Overlord Season 4 aired from July 2022 to September 2022, comprising 13 episodes that adapted volumes 10, 11, and 14 of the light novel series. To date, Kugane Maruyama has published 16 volumes of the light novels, with plans to release two additional volumes.
Therefore, Overlord Season 5 is expected to continue the adaptation starting from Volume 15 and may serve as either the penultimate or final season of the franchise.
It’s worth noting that the construction of the fifth season has been surrounded by controversy, particularly due to Kugane Maruyama’s dissatisfaction regarding the continuation of the light novels, stemming from fan translations of a side story titled The Vampire Princess of the Lost Kingdom, which appeared on Reddit.
Given that the fourth season and the recent movie collectively cover the light novels up to volume 14, fans expressed concerns over the feasibility of a fifth season with only two volumes available. However, the author later tweeted that the light novels would indeed include two more volumes, volumes 17 and 18.
Although these volumes have yet to be published, their confirmation provides the necessary source material for Overlord Season 5. It remains to be seen when the franchise’s team will officially announce the project’s production.
